Hi have just got a beosystem 5500, and bought a pair of beolab 6000 active speakers.

My question is how do i connect the speakers to the 5500 ?

You can use the variable line level output - you will need RCA cables for this. The 5500 was really designed for speakerlink rather than powerlink, but you can still work this. The best output is the pre-amp output which means taking out the metal hoops connecting the pre and power amps. this does mean you lose the speaker output on the amplifier but the other so called line output is simply attenuated amplifier output.

The line in/out links were provided for   adding say,a graphic equaliser or monitor type tape deck.Interupting the circuit here will not only cut off the main amp but also the headphone and speaker 2 outlets.Also,as the line output is at fixed line level, you will also need ear defenders,as the speakers will only play at full volume!!

Better to connect to the pre-amp output sockets, and vary volume normally. However the speaker muting does'nt work when connecting headphones or pressing mute,so if you have speakers in a link room, the main speakers will always come on too!

A compromise solution is to fit attenuator output connectors to the speaker 1 outlets. The amplifier will then work well with the BL6000's.Not ideal,as the signal is effectively being amplified twice, but the output stage in this unit has very low noise and distortion,so it's not a problem in practice. You have more power available for link speakers too!

Another option is to modify the BM5500 to create a powerlink output, adapting the circuitry of the later BM6500.This too is sucessfull, but the compromise solution avoids interfering with the Beomaster.

Regards,

Nick
