Long ago, in a forum far, far away, Keith said:

In my view, if you intend to purchase an AVANT you should go for a 32" DVD version which is Type numbers 844X for the Mark I version and the EU version (Non UK) is Type 8446. The Mark II version is 845X. These two versions use the same software.

This leads me wonder how the Mark I and Mark II Avants actually differ. If they use the same software, that implies that they use the same hardware and that I could interchange PCBs between them. Is that correct?

I had both

My MK1 was repaired many times...change tube..DVD etc

So I got MK2 for replacement and there was no "magnetic" problem with the tube on that!

More I don't know!

I'd be interested to know this as well. I would also be keen to know the rationale for choosing a 32" Avant over a 28", other than the obvious size differences.

I have a 28 inch silver Avant DVD, which is a fairly late one (2003), I absolutely love it but are there any differences in terms of software between this and the 32"?

Thanks

Ben

I have a 32" avant dvd with the flat tube and it is quite nice. I don't use it much for video, mostly as a link speaker. The sound is warm and full.

Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2,

The Avant MK II were updated with a new generation of the Real Flat picture tube.

This was mainly done to improve the following parameters:-

  • Better static and dynamic geometry
  • Better horizontal linearity
  • More light emission out of the tube
  • Improved reliability (the complex PCB on the neck of the tube is removed)

Main electrical differences to AVANT RF MK I

  • New generation of picture tube
  • New deflection PCB
  • New TV Software
  • Changed wiring between tube and deflection PCB (one flat cable deleted - apart from this, no change)
  • DVD is updated to a new version The Mark 1 unit was called type ASD1. Mark 2 DVD in both 28" and 32" DVD is called SD3. Compatibility: Note that an ASD1 type unit must always be replaced with an ASD1 and an SD3 type must always be replaced with an SD3 type. The SD3 version is recognised by a label on the module (DVD mechanism itself is unchanged).

There were no mechanical changes made to the AVANT Mark 1

Whilst the Mark 1 & Mark 2 AVANT's used the same software without modification, the Mark 3 had updated software.

In a MK I picture tube the PCB on the neck of the tube has 5 small potentiometers (which must never be adjusted !). It has a cooling plate, and the size of the PCB is approximately 115 x 85 mm
On a Mark 2 the PCB on the neck of the tube is only 80 x 45 mm.
Below is a diagram to show how to identify a MKI and a MK II tube.

Hllo,

I have god one avant 28 MKI and one avant 32 MKII.

The picture quality with the 28 is very good but with the 32 is " bof ".

Sound is very wood with 28 or 32.

Thank you, guys.

Keith - thank you for clarifying the differences. I couldn't see why there would be a Mk II with the same software as a Mk I. But I can understand that a change to the tube could well be a pure hardware change, from the Deflection PCB onwards. It also suggests that over time, he picture on a Mk I Avant DVD will degrade more quickly than that on a Mk II.
