I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on connecting HD component to a 32" Avant (US spec/no SCART).  I see 2 HD options (RGB(5 connectors/YPrPb (3 connectors)  I've tried a Tivo and DVD player, both of which have the standard red/green/blue component (I've never seen the 5 connections before).  I've tried to select both generic RGB/Y in the SAT and DTV, no pic shows, but it will have show if I use the composite.  Any suggestions, do I have to deselect something?

Thanks

The 32" Avant US is only capable of displaying up to 480P on the CRT TV itself. If you have a connected projector, the HD input can pass through 1080i to the projector. However, you will get a blank screen on the Avant TV since the signal is greater than 480p. If you have a projector connected, I find it desirable to ALSO connect the composition video cable to the Avant, if available. This way, you get the 1080i signal on the projector and still get 480i shown on the TV. Because of the Avant's amazing video processing, a 480i signal is actually beautiful on the Avant. Note that the Avant only can support sending 480i, 480p, or 1080i to a projector. It does not support 720p at all. This can be a complication with some connected devices. For example, the 2nd Gen and newer Apple TV does not offer 1080i. While the 2nd Gen and newer Apple TV does support 480p, it has only an HDMI video connection and no component support. I'm trying to connect an Apple TV to my Avant using an HD Fury 1 that I had lying around. The HD Fury 1 takes the video signal from HDMI / DVI, strips off the HDCP restrictions, and converts the signal to VGA / RGB. Unfortunately, my Avant is missing the VGA input. I set the Apple TV output to 480p60 and tried using a VGA to component (3 RCA connectors) cable. This didn't work. I think that since the HD Fury 1 converted the signal to RGB that I would need to use a VGA to 5 RCA (Red, Blue, Green, Horizontal, and Vertical) cable. We usually see this type of connection referred to as "BNC." However, the BNC connectors are different than RCA and use a bayonet style connection.

Much easier for an Apple TV would be to use an HD Fury 2 or newer converter. This would convert the HDMI signal to component. I was just trying to make use of what I already had available.

I hope this helps some.

So might it be that I just have to set the Tivo output to 480p?  I assumed it would auto-output.  Or with the Avant picture (gorgeous BTW) 480p isnt that much better than 480i.  Funny, I've never seen another product with the 5 connector BNC, also was confusing since usually RGB is the generic term for YPrPb, and the color of the connectors.  Thanks for the advice, I'll see if setting the output will be a solution.

You should be able to just connect the component connector from the Tivo to the Avant. You probably do need to select 480p output on the Tivo. The Avant cannot downscale like more modern tvs do.

The 5 connector BNC was more common back when the Avant was introduced. BNC and VGA were common connectors for projectors back then. This got VERY frustrating with the BeoSystem 1 -- which is basically the Avant chassis without the tv screen. It was nearly impossible to find third party tv screens that were compatible with the BeoSystem 1 requirement for VGA or B,R,G,H,V.

Something worth mentioning is that many of the earlier Avants were prone to getting a horrible magenta hue with video content going through the HD input. The Avant came out at a time when HD was still in its infancy and the Avant often had this fault. Sometime the magenta hue would happen after awhile. Unplugging the Avant and the source device from the power and restoring power often set the video back to normal --- until the magenta hue returned later.
