Dear all,

I used time today to play a little with my newly acquired Beolab 3s. They came with the Powerlink MK III cables they apparently were used with for the last couple of years. Ok, so I connected them to the Boecenter 2500 and - one didn't react at all, whereas the other had a loud humming noise... Not what I wished for.

Ok, so I've read about cabling issues here before and had quite some Powerlink cables in reserve. After playing around for a while, I managed to get both speakers to react. However, only one does what it should. The other one is playing music but quite noticably humming no matter what cable I use. However, the humming does seem to depend on the cable. There are some cables with which the speaker does not play music at all and hardly hums. With other cables the humming is more prominent but the speaker also plays music and the louder it is the less noticable the humming becomes. When trying a MK 1 cable, the standby light went orange for a short time. This didn't happen with any other cable. Any ideas?

Greetings,

Kai

Kai,

if you have one speaker that works perfectly, what happens if you remove that speaker and put the other one in its place?  If it works OK, then you know the speaker is OK.  If not, you have a problem speaker!  What happens if you swap the 2 Powerlink cables coming from the BC2500 to the speakers, does the problem swap between speakers or is it the same speaker having an issue?

Are the set-up and placement switches set properly i.e. not 'between' positions?  Set to L or R and not Line?

If you have a Powerlink splitter, what happens if you daisy chain them from either one of the Powerlink outlets?

Dave.

Thanks Dave. Will check the switches tomorrow. It is the speaker I'm afraid. Swapping one to the other gives the same problem. The problem itself is strange since the spekaer plays music - so the amplifier section is not probable to be at fault. However, the music is played at too low level. The noise is cable dependent. It's never good but depending on the cable it's better or worse - at least different.

What's interesting is that first, I couldn't find a cable that works on any of the two speakers. With the cables I had tried so far, both reacted similarly until I found one the worked for one speaker but apparently not for the other one. That is , speakers reacted similarly to non-working cables, but asymmetrically to the one that worked...

Hi Kai,

where did you buy them from?  sounds like you need to return them for a refund, repair or replacement.

Dave.

Hey Dave,

yes, doesn't sound too good. Privately. I'll ask the local repair shop first what's wrong. I'm always hesitant about getting back to sellers since it's at least partly my risk as a buyer. Of course I have asked whether the speakers are working and they told me that this was the case. On the other hand I got quite a bit of stuff (Beolab 3500, Beocenter 2500, Beovision 3 on motorized stand, remotes, MC/MCL, etc.) + the speakers for 800 Euros. So it's not too bad, I guess. Would have been different if I got an as new pair for 1800 Euros. In that case, I would of course have been quite disapponted. This way. I'll try my best to get them back in track! Although of course not what I would have wished for this is part of the fun when collecting. If everything turned out perfect every time, it would only be half as enjoyable.

Greetings,

Kai

It was the ICE unit. Speaker was too silent when using the correct cable. I will have the ICE unit replaced. Greetings
