i use the A8 to improve the sound of my Samsung TV, but I am just wondering if I am using the best socket.  At the moment, I am using the earphone socket on the TV. Is there  another socket that would improve sound even more?

I've connected my samsung to my overture using the optical digital out, via a converter box (very cheap on eBay)  Nd from there by standard audio cable.

sounds very good but it depends what outputs you have..

You might need to select external speaker to use the optical output

Most modern (non-B&O) tv's have a digital output.

You would have to use a digital to analog converter/DAC, if you want to use the analog input on the A8 with that.

Even the cheap small DAC's have a better sound output, that a headphone output on most tv's.

But you might experience a small delay of the sound - if it is too noticable, it can be annoying.

And you will have to get hands on a DAC, that can decode the sound format, that is outputted from the digital connection of the tv.

I'd say - test it with a good cable and see/hear how it workd, before you start unvesting in a DAC.

My samsung (and I suspect most , as mines a year or two old) has a way of adjusting delay on the optical output, but I've not noticed a delay - you've got me looking now!

The headphone socket cuts off the tv speakers , as you'd expect , but this may not be always desirable so the optical seems the best bet.

the box I got was under a tenner delivered and seems to work fine, maybe won't last but we'll see and perhaps I'll need to upgrade when it goes wrong !

Thanks. Sounds good. Presumably I would need a spare socket for the DAC. Also, what cables would I need a. From TV to DAC, and b. From DAC to A8?

You go digital into the DAC - and need an spdif cable, either toslink or coax depending on the output of the tv.

You go analog from the DAC - mostly left and right (stereo) rca/cinch cable from the converter to the input of the A8.

The DAC neeeds power to work - mostly from an external power supply (some can be powered through a usb connection).
