Most commenters predict that the new format will be a failure. Only time will tell.

Of course only time will tell!
However the UHD/BluRay is relatively futureproof (if we can talk about futureproof at all).
With the right tv/display - which are yet to come - it will bring us unmatched picture and sound quality.
If you don't have or intent to buy one of these tv's, you are very well served with the standart/HD BluRay!
Everyone can buy a UHD/BluRay-disc and pop it in. Not many will (for years to come) be able to stream or download content in the same quality.
Whether the UHD/BluRay will be a success or not, depends on the wishes and needs of the consumers - do they want the high quality picture and sound experience or are they happy with less?
I guess the UHD/BluRay will be more of a niche market product - but I don't doubt, that it will survive.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
Raeuber:B&O should jump on this train because UHD Blurays will provide DTS:X, Dolby Atmos, and Auro-3D sound formats. They could sell so much more Beolabs and that's why they should develop a sound engine supporting these sound formats. Regards Räuber

That is not as easy as it seems.
If you use the audioengine of the current tv's, the UHD/BluRay players would have to decode these audioformats (to PCM), because the audio engine does not support these formats.
However this is not part of the standart - these format are supposed to be decoded in a preamp/amp and will be transported as bitstream audio.
Whether the audioengine of the Avant at some point will be capable of this/whether B&O want this, I don't know.
My guessing is that this won't be possible, untill we see a new BV.

With these specs, 10K EUR for a 55incher is a justified price. Solid investment into next 10 years of happy watching. :)
It just doesn't make sense B&O putting a 4K blu-ray player in a TV - not in todays market/generation. Plus for people who want this format, surely it's nice to choose a brand that appeals to you (OPPO, Pioneer, Panasonic, Marantz) - remember B&O fitted damn Samsung blu-ray players to their TVs and be truthful, if you had the choice, would you REALLY buy a Samsung player? I hear 99% saying no!

Well hopefully it will hit the market before DEM gets back.

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.
Chris Townsend:If it was a Mk1 then yes it has a Samsung Bluray player, and yes it wasn't very good. The Mk2 was a huge improvement, and Oppo was mentioned when I asked, but never really confirmed.
B&O is a third class company. Produces just crappy products with damn Samsung things in it. The only exception is A8! It's a great product :)
I'm just laughing my ASS off...
Beovision Avant 55 / BV 11-40 / BV7-40 / Beovision Avant / Beosound 9000 / Beosound 5 Encore / Beosystem 4500 / Beosystem 6500 / Beocenter 9000 / Beolab 5000 / Beolab 18 / Beolab 19 / Beolab 11 / Beolab 17 / 3 sets of Beolab 4000 / Beovox Red Line 60.2
BeoPiranha - Get a life!
Sorry guys not Oppo in the BVs - Samsung!
It will be interesting to see if this has legs or not. Just about every set these days has 3D support, every BluRay player I know of does 3D, and almost no one releases content in 3D or uses the 3D in their sets. I know plenty of people with 1080p sets who have never upgraded to a BluRay player. I predict that there will be a lot of people with 4k sets because the industry will push them who will never go the full distance and acquire 4k content.
High dynamic range has more potential to improve video, but most sets produced today won't even reproduce the dynamic range of regular DVD or BluRay.
Time will tell I guess, I might be wrong but it'll be interesting to watch. Now all we need for good entertainment is a format war, ala Beta/VHS and HD-DVD/BluRay.
Jeff
I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.

Paul please don't degrade other people like that. You wouldn't like it if people insulted you and thought bad thoughts about you would you? As I mentioned before, there was A LOT of bullying on this site and it must stop immediately. It is very very bad for BANG&OLUFSEN's image and does nothing to remove the stuffy image of the brand that even yesterday newspaper mentioned!
If you can't say anything nice about a person, then seriously shut up!
Definitely not the OPPO!
Raeuber: AnalogPlanet: With these specs, 10K EUR for a 55incher is a justified price. Solid investment into next 10 years of happy watching. :) That is true. But I am actually not sure if I have to pay this new BV in EUR or in 'Deutsche Mark'.

I'd prefer, if it was in DK-kroner.
And I would take it with an inbuilt (UHD-)BRP, but only if it must be.....

I agree with you on this!
It would only add unneccessary to the costs of the tv (and to the list price) - and not everyone would want it.
Besides, I am pretty sure, that B&O would never do that again - too complicated.
P.S. It is not a 4K player. It is a UHD player, which - in addition to more pixels - includes HDR, WCG and HFR...
Thank you for showing us your level. I appreciate it ;) and still I keep laughing :)
Two words for this technology announcement. LASER DISC.
Only a small number of people will care for this ultimate level of quality. They also buy hi-fi separates.
Hopefully B&O will not make the mistake again of putting a drive in the TV. The Blu-Ray in the BV7- which I had - was a huge mistake. I'm sure B&O have learnt a lot about a product with essentially multiple operating systems or loosely integrated code in one unit and know its just a bag of hurt.
Hold on in there people.
If you want this high quality, get a next gen Oppo. If you want 80% of it (from films etc) and the best 1080P, which most day-to-day TV will be at for years to come get an Avant today and sit tight till the end of the year.
mawheele:come get an Avant today and sit tight till the end of the year.
BeoNut since '75
Not sure if you've seen this. But as I said the 4K onslaught starts in August. Get your Avant orders in now ;-)
From engadet:
While BT will begin charging Sky subscribers for access to Champions League football next season, the company may soon ask for more money from existing customers too. It's for a good reason, though: the company has said it will launch the first 4K channel in Europe in August, called BT Sport Ultra HD, delivering selected matches from the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and Aviva Premiership Rugby. As you'd expect, these broadcasts won't work on BT's existing hardware, so it'll introduce a new BT TV Ultra HD set-top box to do the heavy lifting.
Details are scarce but we do know that it'll be BT's "best ever" Youview+ box and is capable of storing up to 600 SD hours or up to 250 HD hours on its 1TB hard drive. In February, reports suggested that the broadcaster had brought forward the launch of its new box in order to steal a march on Sky. It's believed that it could also share streams to smartphones and tablets, like EE TV, and let users access recordings while on the move. BT also says that Ultra HD content will only be available to BT Infinity subscribers.
With BT soon to push 4K content, you can expect that Sky won't be too far behind. It too is said to be readying a new internet-connected 4K set-top box, but has yet to confirm plans. If you already own a 4K TV and intend to jump on BT's new hardware, the Community Shield will be the first match to be shown in Ultra HD when it kicks off in August.
Bv7Mk3:A 4k movie streaming site is starting in September! Can't remember the name but did read it awhile ago!
Easy now - they haven't even agreed on the specs for a HDR standart yet!

Let's see what the chinese bring.
Maybe the days of Japan and Korea already are over.
