Hi guys,
I am wondering if there are going to be any issues with putting BeoSound 4 on the same ML network as BeoSound9000, BeoSound 5, and BeoVision 10?
Envisioned distribution sources:
CD/Radio -> BeoSound 9000N.Music/N.Radio -> BeoSound 5
Are there going to be any conflicts with this setup? Will I still be able to listen to a CD or Radio in BS4 without affecting the rest on ML network. All these units are in separate rooms.
Thanks,
Dee
Others will be able to give a better/definitive answer on how two audio masters on the same network will behave.
But may I ask why do you want to do this ?
Other options I can think of are:
BeoNut since '75
Thank you elephant for your quick reply. I have attached the wiring diagram of my house. Hopefully, this would make it easier to understand what I am trying to do. Right now, I am kind of struggling to understand what I can have on ML and what I can't. My understanding was I would run ML to the rooms where I want to distribute sound from B&O master sources. Therefore, I was planning to run ML to BS4 in the master bedroom (see attached PDF), so I would be able to play N.MUSIC and N.RADIO from BeoMaster 5 located in the media closet on the first floor. I am not too concerned about being able to play CDs/RADIO from BS9000 on BS4, but I believe this comes as a given once I connect BS4 to ML. On the other hand, I am not sure if this type of setup is going to interfere with operations of BS9000 and maybe local playback of CD/Radio on BS4. So, this is my dilemma right now -- to run or not to run ML cable to BS4 location.
Thanks for sharing the plan of the wiring & setup of your house -- it looks a magical set-up.
An idle question, but are the "B&W" symbols for ceiling speakers scattered around the house ?
As I can now see, the Beosound 4 is already in-situ in the bedroom - along with the Beovision 10; so you want to have a local source capability, but also access what's on the hard drive (and internet) of the Beomaster 5.
I am sure it is do-able but I would prefer for some one with more experience of complex situations to comment (KoS, Rex, Trip for example).
I guess once it is all working, you plan to connect the Beolab 8000s to the BV10 rather than the BS4 ?
B&W are for Bowers & Wilkins ceiling speakers. I was planning to connect BL8000s to BS4 and then connect BV10-46 via ML to BS4, so I can reuse BL8000s when watching TV. Is there a problem with this approach?
For that room the 8000 speakers should be connected to the 10-46, 10-46 and bs4 connected by ML, audio default set to speaker 2, video default set to speaker 1. I have already drawn attention to the inadvisable combination and positioning of speakers/tv in this room.
IMHO, this is a sizeable install with other added complexities which requires professional attention which should be sought. Who is going to configure the system once installed or negotiate hiccups? Any advice given through forum posting needs to be qualified by others on site in California!
My knowledge is limited to having only one Audio and Video master on the ML bus, the only exception I can think of is much later 9000's which could be configured to operate as CD1 and 2, and I assume RADIO1 and 2, don't know if this extends to a BSYS4 but don't know serial or type/sw level etc.
The problem out here in LA is that there are really no knowledgeable installers. The B&O is not as popular as in UK and there are just a couple of companies providing installation services. I've been screwed by both in the past and had to let them go. I have a 3rd company now helping with integration and design, but unless I understand how things work, I am sure something is going to be missed. This is why I am running this by you guys just to get a second opinion on the design.
Could you please help me understand what happens if I leave BL8000s connected to BS4 as shown on the diagram instead of BV10-46? According to the BS4 manual, this looks like a valid setup (Option 1 for TV and Option 1 fro BS4). Unless I am missing something.
Thank you.
Interesting setup. I`d recommend to configure the living room (L) as the mainroom in your installation.
Replace the BV10-46 by a BV7-40/55 as videomaster, because it has the Timerplay feature, which the BV10 does not.
Set BV7 to option 2 - V.OPT 2 - (videomaster, responding to video- and audiocommands and being able to distribute sound and picture to all masterlinked rooms).
Set BS9000 to option 0 -A.OPT 0 - (audiomaster, responding to IR commands via the BV7, and can distribute sound to all connected linkrooms)
Set BS5 to NO AUDIOMASTER - (responding to IR commands via BV7 an distributes sound -N.RADIO, N.MUSIC to all connected rooms)
BS9000 and BS5 should be installed in the mainroom (room L), because operating them manually will always activate the mainroom speaker system.
BC2 won`t work in that installation, I´m afraid...
Room M:
Set BV10 to V.OPT 5 ( linkroom-TV, responding to videocommands from local TV and from videomaster/BV7 in room L.
Set BS4 to A.OPT 5 (responding to audiocommands from local source/BS4 and main source selecting LINK-CD, LINK-RADIO...)
Pressing AV-TV in room M should activate your BV10 and your BS4/BL8000, but I`m not quite sure. But you can use a Bosscom Powerlink switch, if this won`t work.
Room F:
Another video linkroom incl. surround installation :)
Set BV4/BS3 to V.OPT 6 (responding to video- and audio commands from local devices and from mainroom sources.
BC2 doesn`t make much sense in this room imo, but you can install it as a local audiosource. In this case set BV4/BS3 to V.OPT 5 and BC2 to A.OPT 5. BC2 will need its own Beolabs...
Room E (Garage):
Set BL3500 to L.OPT 6 responding to audio- and videocommands from mainroom sources.
All B&W and BV1linkrooms ( kitchen, floor hall, master closet, master bath...) can be powered by Beolink passive amps set to L.OPT 6 responding to audio- and video commands from mainroom sources.
For the bedroom B I recommend a BV10-40, not masterlinked.
For the office O I`d choose a beolink active in L.OPT 6 and a Beo6 with 2way communication. So you won`t need a BS5 E in this room.
You can connect your iphone dock to the PC input (it`s a line input) of the BL active as a local source. You can connect the BL4 in parallel to the BL8000s, but I wouldn`t recommend it....
Anything forgotten?
I`m missing spakers in the dining room D....?:)
And `m missing a Masterlink Gateway. You could control the whole system via your iphone, ipad including light, curtains, cameras via a home automation system - as said: an interesting setup.....
Hope this helps a bit
Stefan
Hi Stefan. Thank you very much for taking the time to provide me with the feedback. Unfortunately, I am not very flexible with the equipment. I am trying to reuse what I already have (solid red on the diagram) and I've identified what still need to be purchased based on the aesthetics and available space. The main goal right now is identify whether I missing any wiring since the walls are still open and I can easily add them, if needed.
I've tried to respond to your comments below. Hopefully this format is going to work. Please let me know if you have any additional thoughts and again, thank you for all of your input.
Dee.
stefan: Interesting setup. I`d recommend to configure the living room (L) as the mainroom in your installation.
This room has BS9000 that will be master for CD/Radio source.
stefan: Replace the BV10-46 by a BV7-40/55 as videomaster, because it has the Timerplay feature, which the BV10 does not. Set BV7 to option 2 - V.OPT 2 - (videomaster, responding to video- and audiocommands and being able to distribute sound and picture to all masterlinked rooms).

Unfortunately, can't do that. Visually BV10-46 is the best fit for this room and everything has been already pre-wired for it + BL6002 speakers. Are you sure BV10 doesn't have the Play Timer function. I've looked it up in the manual and it talks about its setup. I don't have this TV yet, so can't confirm whether the hardware matches what's in the user guide. Also, please note that I don't want to distribute video -- just audio only. Each TV in other rooms will have it's own video source, so they can operate independently.
stefan: Set BS9000 to option 0 -A.OPT 0 - (audiomaster, responding to IR commands via the BV7, and can distribute sound to all connected linkrooms) Set BS5 to NO AUDIOMASTER - (responding to IR commands via BV7 an distributes sound -N.RADIO, N.MUSIC to all connected rooms) BS9000 and BS5 should be installed in the mainroom (room L), because operating them manually will always activate the mainroom speaker system.
The position of BS5 is already fixed and prewired in that spot. The idea was to have it available in the hall as I come through the main door. This way I can turn on the music before taking my shoes off. :)
stefan: BC2 won`t work in that installation, I´m afraid...
I was planning to keep it off ML and just use for local DVD playback. That should work, right?
stefan: Room M: Set BV10 to V.OPT 5 ( linkroom-TV, responding to videocommands from local TV and from videomaster/BV7 in room L. Set BS4 to A.OPT 5 (responding to audiocommands from local source/BS4 and main source selecting LINK-CD, LINK-RADIO...) Pressing AV-TV in room M should activate your BV10 and your BS4/BL8000, but I`m not quite sure. But you can use a Bosscom Powerlink switch, if this won`t work.
The main idea behind connecting BS4 to ML was being able to access N.MUSIC and N.RADIO on BeoMaster 5. If I can't play CD/RADIO from BS900 in the living room (L) that would be OK. If connecting BS4 to ML creates problems, than I can probably connect it to BV10 in the same room via ML and keep it off the main ML network as local units for that room only.

This is the main room for watching movies. I have ML running there now, but don't know if I am going to really use it or not. Ideally, I'd like to be able to play N.MUSIC and N.RADIO on BeoMaster 5 from this room as well. I was planning not to connect BC2 to the ML, but I do want to be able to play DVDs through it on BV4 and BS5. I am not going to use BC2 for anything else, but watching DVDs. Will that approach work?
stefan: Room E (Garage): Set BL3500 to L.OPT 6 responding to audio- and videocommands from mainroom sources.
OK.
stefan: All B&W and BV1linkrooms ( kitchen, floor hall, master closet, master bath...) can be powered by Beolink passive amps set to L.OPT 6 responding to audio- and video commands from mainroom sources.
That was my plan too. Though not sure I need that many ceiling speakers now.
stefan: For the bedroom B I recommend a BV10-40, not masterlinked.
Any reason why not to use BL7-40 in this room? I already have this TV and was planning to hang it in that room off of the main ML network. This TV will have its own sources.
stefan: For the office O I`d choose a beolink active in L.OPT 6 and a Beo6 with 2way communication. So you won`t need a BS5 E in this room. You can connect your iphone dock to the PC input (it`s a line input) of the BL active as a local source. You can connect the BL4 in parallel to the BL8000s, but I wouldn`t recommend it....
Any issues keeping BS5 E in that room? This thing looks really good on the wall and I'd like to keep it independent of the main room sources, so I can play in the office what I want and operation of the main sources will not affect my listening experience in the office. BL4s will be connected to my Mac only as local Mac speakers.
stefan: Anything forgotten? I`m missing speakers in the dining room D....?:)
I`m missing speakers in the dining room D....?:)
That was intentional. No distractions in the dining room. :)
stefan: And `m missing a Masterlink Gateway. You could control the whole system via your iphone, ipad including light, curtains, cameras via a home automation system - as said: an interesting setup.....
The house automation will be handled via Control4, but I do believe I'll need ML Gateway at some point, so it can translate B&O commands to Control4 via RS232. Though, my current installer really trying to talk me out of it due to his bad experience with MLGW performance. Something, I'd have to think about more in the future.

In a masterlinksystem you have one audiomaster and one videomaster, which means one audiomaster for all audio sources: RADIO, CD, N.MUSIC, N.RADIO, A.AUX... and one videomaster for all videosources: TV, DVD, V.MEM, DTV, PC, DVD2....
That`s why your BS5 can`t be configured as an audiomaster, so you have to set it to NO AUDIOMASTER. BS9000 will be the audiomaster, that can handle N.MUSIC and N.RADIO sources. Two audiomasters won`t work in a single masterlink system.
You can use a BV10 as a videomaster (V.OPT 1 or 2). And yes, I`m quite sure, the BV10 has no Timerplay function. We had this discussion before in another thread. But I saw you have a Control4 system, so this should be able to do a Timer play in connection with an MLGW.
In your setup I highly recommand an MLGW. Mine is working without any issues with all my Beo-stuff and my KNX home automation system...:)

You can install your BS5 in the hall, but be aware, it will activate your main system in the livingroom, when you activate it manully.
In my setup I can assign a button next to the door to activate my Beosystem in the rooms where I want music. At the same time it can open the curtains and activate the light. All with a touch of one button. This button I call "Welcome". This will also work with a keyring from outside the house - before I take my shoes off...;)

I had a look into the manual, but I`m not quite sure. Sorry, I have no experience with the BC2, I never had one in my setup.
But maybe this will work....(?)
-----------------

The configuration as a linkroom with the BS3 set to V.OPT 6 lets you access all audio sources from your BS5 and BS9000 in the mainroom.
The BC2 manual says, BC2 can be configured as a DVD player to V.OPT 0, so it will be controlled via the TV. This usually works via datalink through the Scart cable. But I heard in the US you have no scart, so `M a bit lost here. Maybe somebody will know more about this issue....(?)
--------------
If you don`t need videolink, set BL3500 to L.OPT 5 - responding to audio commands only.
-------------------
That`s what I thought too. If this were my setup, I`d plan ceiling speakers in the kitchen, in the bathroom(s), in the garage (BL3500 for the hall), and maybe in the master closet.
------------------
Nothing technical. You won`t need the special features of a BV7 in this room - BV10 is cheaper (...less expensive...)
Maybe a BV V1 with integrated mediaplayer would be the right choice for a kids room...?
No issues with BS5 E. I have a mac mini in my office, and I`m using Beoplayer via Parallels/WinXP. So I can access my BS5 independandently from the mainroom. This also works with my Macbook wirellessly, so I can use my BS5 also in the garden. You can also use Beoplayer to transfer CDs to your BM5. A BS5E should also work.
No music, no TV in the dining room - nice idea....:)
If you already have Control4 system, MLGW is a must (!) installing such an extendes ML system as you do....
I don`t know why your installer is trying to talk you of the MLGW. Maybe he had bad experiences with the first MLGW. I`m using my MLGW (II) since about 6 months now, it makes the whole system simple - controlling light, curtains, Beo, cinema, cameras just with one button (and it never failed until now.
I think Stürrock has experiences with a Control4 system and MLGW. He is a Beoworlder too. Maybe he can tell more about that installation...
Oooops, it`s a loooong post...:))
Thank you Stefan for your detail answer. I do appreciate it very much. This thread will be my reference when we finally start configuring the system. I am glad someone had a positive experience with MLGW. I guess I'd need to ensure to go with the latest version then.
Thank you to everyone else who helped with my questions. Not much support for B&O enthusiasts around here. :)
