BeoLab 8000 loud distortion

I have a pair of BeoLab 8000 that is behaving very strangely. 

They both make a humming noise that is very noticeable while powered on but one of the two also makes a buzzing sound that is very annoying. If I disconnect them from the mains for an hour and use them, they will sound better but as they warm up they will start making the humming/buzzing again. 

I have tried different cables and different setups (Powerlink MK1/2/3 and RCA-cables, different BeoSounds, BeoVision and AirPort Express) and they always sound the same so I do not think it is the cables.

The serial information on them is as follows:

• 6801/159676XX/1680101 (mainly humming)

• 6801/159676XX/1680101 (buzzing sound like high voltage station)

 Anyone got a suggestion for what I can do? I don't think cleaning the connectors will help or that there is a cable malfunction since I have tried so many different things (Yes also switched the R/L/line many, many times). Also placed them in different places to see if the distortion is from something in my home but it is not. I also have another pair of BL8000´s and they don't make these sounds just a very faint hum.

Should I send them in to a repair man and have the amplifiers replaced? Can I do anything? Perhaps bad caps?

Not an expert, but could it be some kind of electric load on the amplifiers?

You should have them serviced, or adjusted by someone who know what they are doing.

It is a bit strange that both have the same problem... doesn't it come from the source?

I have had humming with all of my B&O equipment. It turned out that it was the antenna cable I had connected (cable antenna).

They both have a hum, but one makes a very high buzzing noise. I have updated the original post with a link to a sound to explain. And as I said, I have tried several sources, unfortunately.

It is not the antenna cable, and I have tried different combinations of units so the problem is definitely in the speakers themselves.

Unplug, wait a few hours - great sound again for a while. Very strange but seems to be a problem component that I should replace or have replaced.

No one here ever had the same problem? Since I have two speakers with the issue I think more people should have had the problem. But perhaps it is a result of a thunder strike or something?

That's certainly a horrible noise!  Sounds to be an internal component failure of some description especially as it resolves after unplugging for a while and then taking time to return.  Definitely not cable related, nor source if you've tried different sources.

My BL8000's make an extremely faint buzz (barely audible) but I know it's due to the PL cables - I've replaced one (the easy one to get to and it resoolved it)  I have new ones ready to use from Steve at Sounds Heavenly when I get the time to do it as part of finishing the set-up of my TV and sound system.

Looks like you may have a trip to the repair shop unless anyone has any other ideas?

Michael, you can try one thing that I have to do sometimes (a technician trick) : some oxydation can occur on the powerlink connections : unplug and replug the powerlink cables for approx ten times.

It works for me when I have a huge "pop" when touching the cables.

Have you tried swapping the PL cables, Left and Right, to see if the worse distortion/buzz moves with the cable or stays in the same speaker? If it stays the same, also try switching the speakers L and R switches, see if it is in the speakers or the source.

It sounds, from your description of how it works after being shut down, like it's a temperature sensitive component or power supply. It's odd that it's both speakers, I wouldn't have thought both would develop the same issue at the same time. Are you sure it's not the source component? I assume the source component is also off when the speakers are unplugged, though if unplugging the speakers makes a difference over having them plugged in and on standby it's not likely to be the source. You might try hooking the speakers up to something like an iPod or preamp via the RCA connectors and see if it still does it.

Perplexing problem, but you're probably going to need service tech sadly. My 8000s have been flawless since 1997 thankfully. The loaner pair I had did have one issue, the light would not go green when they went from standby to operate, it stayed amber indicating a fault until they had been on for a while then you could see it gradually turn from amber to green. I've not seen or heard a problem like yours though.

It is very annoying. I unplugged the worst speaker and used the other one in my office but it was then I noticed how loud the humm was even in that one. It's the kind of sound you get used to - like ventilation in an office, and when they turn off you realize how painfully annoying the sound was when it was there. So I really want it gone.

Thank you Greg, I´ll try that. I have tried unplugging them a few times but I´ll try it a bit more. Although I don't have the popping noise when touching the cables.

I think I have tried different cables since I have had them setup at different places around my home and at different times but I can try switching the cables too. I don't think that is the issue tough since it occurs also when I use something with the RCA-cable instead, I haven't tried an iPod but a computer and an airport express.

The problem persists if I have the speakers on standby (red) and then use them. So I don't think it is temperature related, more as you say a power supply issue or other component issue. I have to cut power to them totally to get the distorsions away for a little time. Very annoying and strange issue.

I think I will take them apart and clean the boards and connectors and do some simple measurements. If it doesn't help I´ll probably send them for service but I am worried this is as expensive as a used pair is nowadays..

I have the same problem. When I unplug the power link cables, and only have AC cables in, it often turns ON (green) and start buzzing / humming. This has started periodically, and gotten worse over time. Now it is really bad, and I got to a stage were I can't use them.

Did you find a solution Michael?

Connected to tv and coax? Coax only? Any route from coax towords speakers trough any cable? My best bet is an elevates voltage from outside the home. Busses the hell out of my BL12's. All optical now from tv to receiver so it breaks ground loop.

Not yet. Haven't had time to look into it but since the issue comes after some time I think it is electronic. I'm going to check when (if) I have time for it. Hopefully quite soon.

Nope not a grounding issue.

The fix was to replace power supply and crossover boards. Now they work perfectly! Thanks for all suggestions. I got them back this weekend from the B&O service technician. As a bonus they are now upgraded to the latest mark.
