Dear Beoworlders,
I am doing some homework around my new hifi system and aside from buying a Moment in the next couple of months, I wanted to get hold of a Beocenter 2 (a long dream of mine) as I still have a 100+ CDs and my father-in-law only has CDs which he likes to bring over. I will start with a Beolab 17 whilst waiting for a smaller brother of Beolab 90 in the next year or two and then relegate the Beolab 17 to the dining room or bedroom.
Regarding the Beocenter 2:
1. I understand that the later model made a clicking sounded when you pressed on the buttons - what age of manufacture and serial numbers did the feature start with?
2. Has anyone compared the Audio+DAB version vs the DVD+DAB version - was there any difference between the sound quality or loading time to the CD?
3. If it needed a service or repair in coming years can repairers still get parts?
Many thanks!
.
Present: BL90, Core, BL6000, CD7000, Beogram 7000, Essence Remote.
Past: BL1, BL2, BL8000, BS9000, BL5, BC2, BS5, BV5, BV4-50, Beosystem 3, BL3, DVD1, Beoremote 4, Moment.
Is anyone able to help with this enquiry or have some personal experience?
Be most appreciated. I want to pull the trigger on this in coming week or so.
Thank you.
1. I had a BC2 with clicking wheel - search on the forum and you will find the serial. It's a nice gimmick, but not a "must have"
2. No difference to load the CD - had also a "Audio only" device once. The only difference is the black connection box which has a Scart connector and a Video out
3. DVD drive should not be the problem to get them as spare for some years. Go for one which is in perfect cosmetic conditions, as I guess the case is not available as parts. The black box becomes ugly over years
The product page on the main site was updated Sept 2012 and refers to 'Later' models having the pressing confirmed by sound. However, my own BC2, which was bought about 4 years ago and was a demonstration model does not have any sounds when pressing the aluminium.
The product page also suggests little difference between the audio only and dvd player versions other than the omission of some switching component .... you could take a look at the page with a membership upgrade!
Mine is the dvd player version and I've had it on its own supplied feet, the table stand, the table stand reversed into a wall bracket, and finally on the purpose made floor stand. To my eyes it only really looks right either on its supplied feet or on the floor stand. The table/ wall stand requires the cabling to be exposed on the stand (not concealed in the centre tube) and the overall effect is less elegant. The floor stand is the way to go if you can get one.
As far as the pressing/ confirmation clicks are concerned I would be inclined to ask the seller rather than rely on serial numbers or dates.

Does the CD and DVD Version provide the same aound quality?
Which one is more reliable?

FroM the product page of the BC2 Audio:
A new addition to the Beocenter 2 range, the BC2 Audio was exactly the same head unit as the video model but with a simplified socket unit which had the video connections removed. This made it the ideal candidate for partnering the Beovision 7 range so there was no duplication of the DVD function.
That means, by coupling with an socket would turn an BC2 Audio in BC2 Video - right?

Thank you everybody! That's really helpful. I guess I wanted to get the audible click one as someone mentioned on a forum the buttons weren't always as touch sensitive as they could be and in order to be sure it was helpful to have the audible feedback but perhaps it is more of a gimmick.
The advice about finding one in excellent condition was something that hadn't crossed my mind though it should have. As aesthetics are part of the reason for B&O I will do my best to find one that has been well looked after.
Reassuring that even if the laser mechanism fails, it wont be too difficult to source a repair.
Lovely, now I I need to make some calls!
we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.
Depending on where you want to hide the socket box there are 2 cable lengths available. Also there is a wall bracket available for this box which helped me do do a nice installation behind the TV.
