Hi, I have just acquired  a pair of penta 2 speakers to front my main room.  I have noticed that one of the red power LEDs does not change to green when the unit switches on, it just goes out.  When you switch off, it changes to red.  The speaker works, just no green light.

I also notice that ther is a bit of speaker hum from the amp in the same speaker.  The other is silent.  Any ideas?

The next thing is that the foam in the midrange, while intact is as delicate as a cobweb.  Is this really a job that a DIYer can do or is it specialist only.

Thanks in advance

Jonathan

How are you connecting your speakers? Try swapping leads over and see if the hum moves or stays. Then try a different method of connecting the speakers, i.e. if powerlink try line in or speaker(link) input, that will narrow things down a little bit!

Regards the led could be a dry joint, not a major issue if you are good at dismantling and soldering you could have a look at the connector blocks and all the joints on the front board. When I have the front board out I also strengthen the tabs on the plastic switches as they have a tendency to break with age.

Might as well check the main board for bad joints as well but this is slightly more involved than the control board, just pay attention to the area where the fuses are and the card spacer between that and the board.

The mids are one of the easier speakers to refoam as there is more tolerance than other speakers. If your craft skills are up to scratch and you are good at following instructions then go for it. Lots of people do great jobs, but perhaps a large number also knacker their speakers through lack of planning / skill.

Thanks for the info.  The hum is present when nothing is plugged in, so I do not think it is cable orientated.

The led is now working so I think it may be a dry joint.

Are the eBay foam seals any good or should I stay clear? Where else can I get them from?

Cheers

Most Pentas will hum a little with nothing connected to them.
Remember they have no volume control so their input is just left open at full power if nothing is connected.

different folks have differing opinions on the ebay foams, I have been ok so far and happy with what I have received, others not so!

The other penta is silent and the humming one is too loud to be standard.

I have spoken to b&o in Bristol and they could probably do the lot including the amp hum for about £3 hundred.

Anyone got any other suggestions as to a repair outfit in the Bristol/southwest area?

Can I still use the speaker with dodgy foam seals?
