Hello all, and thank you to those who replied to my questions about my new BeoPlay A6.
I would like to learn as much as possible about the Twonky Server but am having trouble finding any good resources.
1. Does anyone know of, or have any good information/resources/manuals/guides about the Twonky Server?
I’m open to using other software for a DLNA server.
2. Does anyone have suggestions for a well documented and supported alternative product that runs on Mac OS X?
What I would like to be able to do is walk up to my A6, touch it to activate it, and have it play a random track from my library.
3. Does anyone know if I can do this? Has anyone done this?
Thanks for your time
Scott M
I use Twonky for my iTunes library on a Mac mini. There doesn't appear to be any documentation that I can find, certainly nothing from their web site. I guess they pretty much feel that it is straight forward. You could try to send them an email, I believe they have a forum also. I think I have an email from their tech support referencing it.
I downloaded Plex which is free and very highly regarded. I chose Twonky because its footprint is much smaller. Plex does a lot more than I want and is much larger.
I would love a random feature on Twonky also. It's not there. The Essence / A6 will default to the last playlist / album playing when started back up on that source. I've had an interesting observation that is sort-of like what you are looking for, so it may be possible. When DLNA finished playing an album it started randomly jumping around playing songs from my library for a while. I thought it might have been previously played songs from cache, but there were songs I haven't played via Twonky. Interestly, what was shown playing on the BeoMusic app was not the song playing. It was typically the same artist though.
I created a large playlist of current songs that I listen to, especially for this purpose so something is always available when I switch to the Twonky source. It would be even better with a random feature. I don't know if it is something B&O would need to implement or if Twonky would have to do it. I suspect if Twonky had the feature then B&O would implement it.
I do wish Twonky would have more customization in the realm of more discrete categories, and iTunes Playlist integration for those who are using it with an iTunes library.
Since BeoMusic doesn't allow a search function on DLNA, I do wish that Twonky would have an "INDEX" feature for all of the available categories.
I'm curious if there can be a search implemented in the BeoMusic App at all. Although I'm happy with the Essence, I think the weakest link is the BeoMusic App.

For the A6 you can configure is which source to play, from standby, when you touch it.
If you select you DLNA source to play first it continues to play from the playlist or song you last played from. There is no option to randomly play from your DLNA source.

It's interesting to note that if you stop (turn it off) during a song, even if there is one second remaining, the next time you play the DLNA source it will start with that song from the beginning.
The twonky foirum is at www.twonkyforum.com! I've only been to the area that provides information on turning on logging to submit to Twonky, but there is probably other good information available. You may even be able to request feature changes there.
