Hi.  I have a Beosound 9000 system which I really enjoy, but I would like to be able to stream music via wifi using my Airport Express, or alternatively through my AppleTV.  I understand that B&O has it's own device called Playmaker wireless receiver, however that is quite pricey.  I would be grateful if anyone would be able to confirm if using either of my Apple devices would work.  Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hi plowe,

Welcome to the forum! PlayMaker (and the newer Essence) are good quality B&O solutions to add wireless music streaming to your Beosound 9000, or if cost is an issue then Apple's Airport Express (£79 GBP new, or from around £30 GBP used on ebay) is a cheaper alternative.

This cable will allow you to connect an Airport Express to the Aux socket on the back of your B&O system:-

Standard cables (for the best value): http://soundsheavenly.com/bang-olufsen/67--trs-5pd-.html

High-end cables (for the best quality): http://soundsheavenly.com/music-systems/78-trs-5pd-super-.html

Please set the Airport Express volume to maximum when connecting to the B&O system – this is normal when using a wireless music player with a home audio system due to the low output levels produced by the Airport Express.

To listen to the Airport Express, simply press "A.Aux" on the B&O keypad, or select this on the B&O remote control by pressing the "LIST" button until the display shows "A.AUX", then pressing "GO".

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Thanks so much for your help.  It appears that Airport Express works but may not be ideal.  It is good to see that there are alternatives to B&O's Essence which is quite pricey.  Another quick follow-up.  Would the Sonos Connect work with the Beosound 9000?

Really appreciate your help.

Kind regards.

Hi plowe,

No problem!  Sonos Connect is ideal, this costs more than Airport Express but is more versatile.

This cable will allow you to connect a Sonos Connect to the Aux socket on the back of your B&O system:-

Please set the Sonos volume to maximum when connecting to the B&O system – this is normal when using a wireless music player with a home audio system due to the low output levels produced by the Sonos.

To listen to the Sonos, simply press "A.Aux" on the B&O keypad, or select this on the B&O remote control by pressing the "LIST" button until the display shows "A.AUX", then pressing "GO".

Kind regards, Steve.

Isn't it great owning a product, although conceived more than 20 years ago, still is a marvel?

..and incidentally one of only two B&O products, capable of truly unleashing the full potential of the Beolab 5.

My BeoGram CD 4500 (with the 4500 master) must be the second one, then!

Why do you say that? And which do you consider to be the other product?

The BS9000 and CD 4500 both had digital outputs, required to run the BL5 all digital all the way to the internal volume control.

Technically both the Beomedia 1 and BM5 had digital out too, but they are both just scaled down htpcs.

To this very day, although the Beolab 5 is still sold, no current B&O device can use it to the full extend!

...Yes you can run BL5 using Powerlink.. But it would be a bit like running a Bugatti Veyron on Winter tires!

Agree - My BM6500, allows loads of connections which is why I still have it - currently it has BGCD6500, BC6500, Playmaker, Turntable, Revox B77 and OneRemote Internet Radio all connected and distributed around the house - not mention it can play the video sources on the one link TV

Hi BEOVOX141.  I completely agree with you that it is still a marvel after all these years.  I'm renovating my condo completely and will get rid of all my Bose and Pioneer systems.  The only one that I will keep is the 9000.  In fact, I have a special place for it... right in the centre of my living room.  Have a great day!

I still absolutely love mine! It was on the vertical wall mount in my last home, on the floor stand in my new one. No matter which of the many stand and mounting options you choose, it's a true work of art.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Along with the Beogram CD5500, 6500 and 7000.

Even the successor of the CDX, the CDX-2 has a digital output.

The BS9000 has, like all the others, only digital output for the CD-player. Not for any other analog sources, Radio and A.Aux.

And it isn't volume controlled. The BL5 has to take over the volumecontrol.

But still, the BS9000 is the nicest one from all. But here it only collects dust...

Indeed. But with the benefit of playing more versatile format audio files. With any lossless or highres files and BM1 or 5 used as digital passthrough, I think you can achieve more. And it is easier to use, scrolling through the library.

I assume that the Beosound Moment has a digital output also?

You are right about the 5500-7000 series having digital out, but I haven't been able to make them work with the Beolab 5.

The point is unless you run digital all the way to the speaker, and let the internal volume control take over, you are not only wasting the dynamic range of the DSP, but you end up having a triple ad/da ping pong conversion before you hear any sound!

And as of right now,- NO current B&O product can do this, despite the fact that the BL5 is still being sold! The last system capable of correctly issuing the CD command to the BL5 was the BV7! The BL5 was abandoned by B&O at Beosys 3!

There might be a workaround using a WISA reciever, but its not confirmed!

Nope! Today,- digital out only exists as WISA or an Atolona HDMI matrix! Besides the BL5 only supports up to 88.2 khz!

So in a way by migrating to the NL network, you take a step backwards!

There could be a techical difference between the 2. I think that the signal level from a 5500 is lower than from a BS9000. So, make sure that you use at least shielded 75 ohm coax cable.
