I have a 400, that I hadn't used in years.  I cleaned and lubricated the arm drop mechanism, and it works find with the cover panels off.  When I put them on the arm doesn't drop.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to Beoworld. If your BG4004 has never been serviced and is fresh out of storage I would recommend you get it serviced.  But that's a different issue.  From the sound of your reported problem it sounds like there is a physical obstruction of the arm lowering release lever.  Did you make sure the Beogram suspension is not locked down?  The aluminum panel around the platter and the smaller rectangular panel under the tonearm must join just right. The backs of the panels (where they join) can hit the tonearm assembly lowering mechanism.

Post some pictures of the tonearm with and without the panels attached.
