Appreciate any help on understanding the numbering on vintage B&O cartridges.  Specifically why a cartridge would have split or shared numbering such as SP6/7 or SP 8/9 and others just SP8.

I recently bought a Dual 1009 to overhaul that had what I thought was a spare cartridge carrier in the original box, but when I got home there was a nicely mounted SP 6/7 cartridge, which was a cool surprise.  Since then I have been reading a lot about B&O cartridges and from what I can tell the main difference between the 6/7 and 8/9 are spherical vs. elliptical stylus and a number of sites sell 1 replacement for the SP6,7,8 and 9.

I won't get a chance to test the cartridge until I do some work on the turntable but found and ordered an SP8 stylus as a backup.

The table came with a GE VR1000-7 cartridge as well, so I am looking forward to checking out these classics.  Both have the original boxes and the albums of the gentleman I got them from were all classical and in pristine condition so I am cautiously optimistic.

Initially, SP6 and SP7 differed in the mounting, where SP6 had a bracket for mounting onto PM arms and SP7 didn't.
SP8 and SP9 likewise (but in golden housings).

The SP8 comes in a completely over the top wooden box - my old dealer told me they used to throw these away!! I have still got one and, ridiculously, it is one of my most prized B&O pieces!!

Super, thanks for the picture.  Just to confirm, sonically the 6 and 7 are the same, as are the 8 and 9, the only difference was the mounting?
