I have found a pair of M75 speakers with stands on the BC mainland at a fair price. Supposedly they are in excellent cosmetic condition needing only the woofers refoamed.
I am attending the All British Car Meet at VanDusen Gardens in Vancouver next weekend so if the M75 speakers are anything like my S75 speakers I would love to acquire them, making the $140 ferry ride all the more worth it. My spouse wants to see the car show, I want the speakers. with luck, everyone wins!
So what is the difference in sound quality between the M75 and S75 speakers?

With a memory fairly typical of a guy my age, I am sure I have posted this question at least once, if not twice. None the less, if the "deal" didn't work out, the responses tend to get dismissed, and "lost in time."
My real goal is a pair of either M100 speakers or better still MS150's however neither come up for sale often and shipping is prohibitively expensive.
But last night I spotted what appear to be very nice M75 speakers at a reasonable price.
I assume that the over-all sound quality is very similar to S75 speakers and if someone can either confirm this or explain the differences, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks!
Hi Jeff,I haven't heard the M70 or M75 but I do have the M100.2 and S75 Beovox's. From what other Beoworld M70 and M75 owners report on them I think you can't go wrong by getting them...especially if the price is good and they have the stands.Regards,John
Different ball park - better controlled bass compared to S75s. The phase link unit suffers from foam rot and if not done, the capacitors will need changing. I kept M100s over MS150s. Buy them.

I have a pair of immaculate M75's, reformed and capacitor kit fitted. The highs and mids are exquisite, cannot fault. Gorgeous warm sounding speaker. Only issue if want to get really picky, is the bass isn't as perfect as the highs and mids. I guess that's what the M100 was designed for. But the bass issue is really splitting hairs and only noticeable on passages of music you know should be slightly bassier.

Hi John,
Thank you for the recommendation, I will take a look next weekend.
Supposedly the cosmetic condition is near flawless, the speakers come with cables, and stands..... and for $200.
IF these speakers look as good as the sellers says they are, I AM buying them.
As always, I really appreciate your advice!

Tiny criticism notwithstanding, your comments only make me want to buy these speakers all the MORE. Thank you!

Hello Peter,
Always GOOD to hear from you. A "Buy them" from you is quite a powerful enticement for me as I highly value your opinion.
I remember with considerable fondness your comment on S75 speakers, "They can make a lot of noise." Well sir, that they can as well as beautiful music.
What you are telling me is the M75 speaker is better than the S75 speaker..... case closed. As long as the seller was honest about the cosmetic condition, I will buy these speakers a week from today.
I know I need to have the woofers refoamed and if I need help with the phase link and caps I hope you and Martin will be here to guide me through that.
But first, I gotta nap them.
My sincere thanks to all for your comments and encouragement.
Hi Jeff,
That is a great buy for sure if they are as advertised (and I hope they are). We'll wait for the pictures.Regards,John
Hello John,
If these M75 speakers are "as advertised" they will be a fantastic find. Photos WILL follow, I promise.
I asked all "the right" questions based on a friend's advice who is in the car business. (I don't advocate their tactics, but am ready to "learn" from them.)
So we'll see.
Thanks for your interest and your help!
I thought the woofers on the M75 had a rubber surround. The M100 does. The M75 is a little bigger than the S75 and has a similar sized woofer - it is a long time since I have seen a pair but I am pretty sure the woofer has a bigger magnet and is a lot heavier. Martin will know!

Hi Peter,
To the best of my knowledge both M75 and S75 have 25cm woofers.
The S75 is smaller and half the weight of the M75 standing 75cm compared to 59cm and 23kg as compared to 11kg.
They do but not the same one! You may be right in thinking the M75 has a foam surround though - the S75 and M100 don't. Will be interested to see!
I am quite sure the woofers are different as you spoke of the difference in bass control and the S75's don't need reforming.Should be interesting to see up close. Now all I have to do is see if the seller shows up. With a week to go he can always sell them to someone else.
Guys,
I purchased the M75 speakers and believe I have a winner. Five hours taken up with the ferry ride, but worth it, I think.
The veneers are virtually flawless and the black stands are excellent.
The woofer and the mid-ranges require re-foaming, but so what?
The aluminum trim is oddly yellow so I started with Simi-Chrome polish and thought, it is nearly 9:00, best left for tomorrow.
I will find out if all the speakers function tomorrow (which I expect) and will take them in for re-foaming on Tuesday. (Monday is a holiday here)
I will check if I have enough fabric to do the frets, and if so, renew them tomorrow. (Thank you Soren for showing me how.)
Here are the pictures.
Another photo.
One more.
Congratulations Jeff. Those look outstanding. You did great.John
Thanks John, I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement.
It was a LONG day, a good one, but a very LONG day. The BIG thing is to see if all the speakers work. If so, the rest is easy.
Fingers crossed.
Beautiful veneer - and shows the difference in woofer - not so beautiful - I am confident it will be soon looking as good as new!
Thank you very much, yes the veneers are stunning.
However one of the speakers is dead, no sound and I need to get inside to find out why.
Tried from the front, but that didn't work, so I tried removing the back, and was unsuccessful.
I read the manual but it offered little guidance.
These speakers are like 99% flawless and I do not want to damage them with guesswork.
So how do I gain access to look for the main problem as well as remove the woofer and mid-range for re-foaming?
Unscrew the back panel screws, unscrew the front woofer screws. Remove the woofer. Use your hand to poke through the woofer hole and push the back panel of. The back panel is tight to push of. Remove some of the sound deadening wadding for improved internal vision as to where to push.
Be carefull as the crossover electrics are on that back board. May have to desolder a few things as the back panel comes of, but work slowly and you will see.
Typo
May have to desolder some stuff WHEN the back panel comes of so as to remove the panel completly.
Thank you Martin.
Oddly enough, this is what I already did, BUT I was afraid to push hard enough on the back panel. Even tried a rubber hammer.
I need to remove the woofers and mid-ranges for re-foaming anyway, but now I know how to get in an investigate.
Now I gotta hope that the fault is obvious enough for a layperson to recognize.
Could it possibly have anything to do with the over-ride protection? Had that issue with my MC120.2 speakers and had to bypass the protection circuit as switch are not available. (You might remember all that....)
Thanks Cooker and Martin,
Opened up the M75 and this is what I found.
I checked the outlet for corrosion but the outlet was pristine. No broken wires, and the caps all look good. I swapped speaker cables just in case, but not the cable.
There is NO sound of any kind, so is there anything else to do other than send the board off for proper testing?
Photo number 2
And photo number 3.
The last photo maybe the most important. Maybe.
All looks nice and original.
