BeoCom 5: can access Line 2, but can't dial out on it?

Absolutely bizarre one ladies, gentlemen and resident experts:

Just picked up a beocom 5, lovely condition... no other problems etc etc --- using a beoline 2 as a base station... phone works perfectly in every way except - get this - I can receive calls from line two... I can interrupt calls on line 2 but, it's so weird, but if I want to make a call out on line two the unit is useless...

You press L2, then the phone button... you can hear the line.... dial the number... you can see the number on the screen and the thing does.......nothing?

repeat exactly the same steps on line 1... works every time

what on earth could I be missing?

Tried resetting base station and handset... both without any luck.

ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions?
