Have some Hikvision cameras run on a DVR HD - will gateway link in with these or does it need to be NVR type?

Appreciate any advise

Don't worry about DVR or NVR. You don't need this unless you want to record.

The BLGW pulls the stream directly from the cameras and after the firmware update on the BLGW, it now supports cameras with H.264 stream - so set your Hikvision cameras to H.264 and then input every field correctly under cameras in the BLGW for it work properly.

Before, it was only the ancient MJPEG stream supported by the BLGW...

If you can't discover the actual video stream path, download the freely available Onvif Device manager for PC it will tell you all you need to know.
