I would appreciate the correct manner to operate this button when retuning the set for the four stations selected . What did the instruction book say.?  The set has been in hibernation for years and the rado I believe has never been used. The record deck is in excellent order and the sound produced is excellent from  radio and record/disc. Can anybody help please

The AFC button stands for Automatic Frequency Control.

This button is used to let the master stay tuned on the chosen radiostation/frequency. Due to varying voltages in the master caused by heat etc, the tuning voltage would also vary and so the master could be slightly off tuned. Out of tune means distortion and possibly no stereo reception.

So, the correct way to tune, or to adjust the the preset station is, turn the AFC off (depress the button), tune on the desired station and press the AFC button. You will notice that you're able to move the frequency slider more to the left or right without losing the station than without using the AFC button.

Tuning without the AFC button gives you the possibility to tune more accurate on the right frequency. After depressing the button, the master is capable of holding (stay tuned) the  frequency better.

But, nevertheless. Most older masters needs a good service as most capacitors are not working properly and then the AFC button could affect the reception in a wrong way.
