Hi applemac1,
A switching unit isn't usually a good idea, as few of these devices are intended to connect multiple music sources to one set of speakers. The results is a very loud THUNK sound when you move the switch position if the speakers are powered on.
A simple "Y" splitter is also best avoided, as this can introduce mains hum and noise onto the audio channels in this type of setup.
Instead, I normally suggest connecting the speakers to the music source that you use most often, then link the other music source to this to share the speakers. Both the Encore and the Essence have auxiliary inputs, so you could use either device as the main music source.
Please let me know if you need any help with cabling to get everything working.
Kind regards, Steve.
Steve.

applemac1:Hi Steve yeah would be interested in knowing how and what cables would be needed.
Yes, Carolpa is correct, please use this cable from the Encore to the Line In of the Essence:-

If your speakers are already connected to the Encore, you can convert the existing cable to fit the Essence RJ45 outputs using these clip-on adapters:-
