Hi

I've just had my mmc 5 cartridge re-tipped, only to find the turntable section of my 7007 isn't working. I've had it over 16 years, and it worked perfectly until about 10 years ago when someone snapped the needle, and I'm now assuming damaged the tonearm.

When I play a record there is silence from the speakers. If I touch the metal casing of the cartridge there is a loud, low buzz, this is reduced (almost stopped) if I touch a metal part of the 7007 (turntable steel, programming section lid) at the same time. When I remove the cartridge there is no sound until I put my finger close to the end of the tonearm (the black plastic part), where it increases until I touch it.

I thought this would be a grounding issue, but when I looked inside there was no obvious issue with detached wires.

Everything else works well, I regularly use the amp for external sources and the mechanism of the turntable seems fine.

Does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks

Samuel

Welcome to Beoworld!

My first guess would be a defective pickup cartridge...
If you have a multimeter, you can check that both coils are still intact.
If you have another cartridge, try it.

All fine? Check the connections from the cartridge mount (socket at the end of the tonearm) to the solder tags below decks.
Note that this must be done with the record deck in "playing" mode (tonearm lowered) or all signals are grounded (muted).

Hi Martin

Thanks, I'll get my multi-meter from work tomorrow and do that. The cartridge was tested before it was sent back to me, so that should be alright.

Am I right to assume the red and yellow wires coming from the tonearm are left and right, and the thin, wispy copper wire is ground?

Thanks

Samuel
