What is the difference between the Beovox M100 and Beovox M100.2?
I can't seem to find anything on this subject.

Hi Jeff,
Martin can probably elaborate but I did find this about the M100-2 speakers on Beocentral -"The final models were fitted with revised drive units and designated M 100-2"
Note also that these speakers were intended for use with the Beomaster 4400.
Regards,John
Hi John,
Thank you, but I did indeed see that on BeoCentral, but all is says is they changed drivers.
And yes I also saw they were designed for the Beomaster 4400, and I think you know the status of my example. (Dead) However I think the Beolab 5000 should be a fair good pairing.
Eventually you should have a nice working Beomaster 4400 to use, right?
John
Eventually for sure. Even with the Beomaster's horribly misguided restoration, using 40 year old NOS capacitors, transistors, and resistors..... plus in an effort to maintain originality, cleaning the trimmers, not replacing them, it played a whole lot better than it had any right to once it settled down, stopped giving off those obnoxious burning fumes, and radically changing the sound quality, as in going from NO bass to INSANELY TOO MUCH BASS.
My crippled Beomaster 4400 gave notice in January and has been sitting collecting dust on my office desk ever since. I need to keep going over in my head the lessons learned as a child: the value of patience.
At least the potenionmeters have been well cleaned. It's a start.
The difference? To be honest - very little.A change in the filter for the tweeter - one resistor if I remember correctly.
Martin
The comparison between Beolab 5000 and Beomaster 4400 is an interesting one as at first glance, the specifications are not dissimilar. Using my Frede restored 5000 and 4401, the frequency response of the 5000 is slightly better but distortion and S/N are quite a bit better on the 4401. However the really big difference is the damping factor which Frede regards as possibly the most important measure for sound quality. The 5000 after restoration ran at 10 R channel and 12 on the left. (More is better)
The 4401 ran 61 R channel and 62 L channel.
Frede reckons you can hear a 10% change in damping factor.
The main change is in bass with low damping factors giving less control of woofers.
Peter
- And the damping factor is the amplifiers output impedance seen in comparison to the speakers input impedance.A low output amplifier impedance has a greater control of the speakers than a higher.
Popular speaking, it can be explained as the amplifiers ability to activate, control the position of - and brake (damping) the speakercones movement.A low output is good for "shorting" the speaker and bring its voicecoil(s) to a halt.
And I agree, it's a very important factor of sound quality.

Very interesting.
I just LOVE these M100 speakers, but one thing surprises me, and this is not technical, just subjective taste, just seeing the difference between these speakers and the 12" woofers (sorry metric folks) I fully expected the M100 to BADLY out-distance the M75, but that was not my experience.
Sure, the M100 is the better speaker, but the M75 really, honestly holds it own. Not every amplifier can handle a M100 after all, but possible the M75.
In any case, statistics be damned, I treasure them BOTH!

In the company of Peter, Martin, and Frede; I am sorely out of my league. However merely as a music lover I "believe" the channel separation is more distinct with the Beolab 5000 as compared to the Beomaster 4400.
Naturally anything I say, however sincere, is suspect as all I have to go by is personal experience with a BADLY compromised Beomaster 4400. I only know what my 4400 sounded like, having NO idea what it SHOULD have sounded like, had it been properly restored. Martin, you above all know exactly what I am talking about.
If Frede feels the BM 4400 is a "superior" amplifier, I rather imagine it is.
This was all very interesting, thanks guys, rather made my day.
