Hi,

I'm thinking about purchasing a pair of shop display pair of Beolab 5's they are 6 years old.

Do you think it is a good buy?

I assume they have probably been pushed hard for potential customers in the store, maybe sent to customers houses for abit?

They will come with a warranty and would be delivered, but are they a better buy than a pair from ebay or a worse buy? (i.e. a pair which has been owned solely by a customer)?

Just want to know your  thoughts on this potential purchase???

Thanks.

I think just due to the warranty alone, ex-demo speakers are a better buy than eBay / private sale. Yeah, you're likely going to pay more, but you're also getting peace of mind knowing that if anything should go wrong, you're covered for a period of time. And if they have been pushed hard, they'd have had to be pushed TERRIBLY hard to have done any damage, I'm sure that shops don't do this. I'm afraid that you're more likely to risk getting a bad pair from a private sale, than ex demo. Just my $0.02.

As for being lent out to customers, once again, if there was damage, I'm sure that the store would have realized it and fixed anything amiss. Surely you can ask the store to connect their PC and run a diagnostic to prove everything is a-ok even give you runtime, and data for information. Even reset the calibration counter for you, so you'd be getting a truly fresh pair, albeit broken in for your pleasure.

Good luck!

I really do not think that there is any thing to worry about Ex-Demo BL-5. There is no way anyone can push those speakers. They are just super built and I can assure you that after almost 8 years of use, they barely show any sign of fatigue.

Agreed, they should be fine and I would always choose to buy from a shop over eBay where you just don't know the history.

B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.
11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.

Just bought a pair of ex-demo speakers and after a little haggling, I've bought something with service backup and the confidence that they've been cared for and not pushed as far as often as someone might do every week in their own home. Aside from TVs that are always on audio equipment and speakers are switched off and unused for most of their time under a dealer's care. You should do an inspect and ask for a warranty of some kind - this is the best way to buy used compared to eBay, etc...The dealer should also replace any cosmetically damaged parts if there are any prior to sale to clinch your sale.
