Hi, I have a strange problem with one of the BeoCom 1 handsets. When powering up starts, the center wheel seems to be working, at least it makes that clicking noise. However, a few seconds later it goes silent and when the phone boots up it doesn't work. All other buttons work fine. Also, if I keep spinning the wheel the whole time the phone is booting, it continues to work. It even works after the boot if I keep on spinning. Once I let it go, a few seconds later it goes silent again and no longer works. I've tried resetting the handset and the base itself, but no luck. Anything else I can try?

If this is not something that can be fixed by resetting, is it still possible to have it repaired. I know B&O stores no longer carry them, but is there anyone in US who could fix them? The problem goes away, if I replace the motherboard with the motherboard from my other BeoCom 1 phone.

That is an interesting problem you have described on your Beocom 1.

The fact that at boot up and if you keep turning the wheel it apparently continues to work does mean that the wheel and its detector electronics is working.

My guess is that something has gone wrong with the micro-processor on the PCB meaning a replacement PCB if you can find one.

The Beocom 1 is effectively a Beocom 6000 with different and incompatible software, so a replacement PCB would have to be obtained from another Beocom 1 as new spares are not available.

One thing you should try before doing anything else, is replace the battery which when marginal can give many different fault symptoms.

Regards Keith....

I was going to suggest a new battery as per Keith's post. You sound like you may have more than 1 handset so maybe try a battery from another handset before spending on a replacement.

Thank you for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I think Keith is right. This issue appears to be with the board itself. It goes away, when I temporary replace it with the board from another phone. Changing batteries make no difference. I guess I'd have to wait until someone sells BeoCom 1 for parts on eBay.
