Hi forum, I'm getting started in the Bang and Olufsen by inheriting my grandfathers BeoMaster 4500 along with the tape and turntable (Beogram 4500 with a MMC2 cartridge). I've hooked the system up at home and glad to see the table turning without difficulty after being stationary for years.
I started with testing a record and although some sound is coming out of the speakers (phew!), the record sounds distant, tinny and distorts heavily as the song gets going. Close examination
I'm anticipating the need to replace the cartridge, which I've realized after searching google & ebay is going to be expensive (even for a refurbished one). Before I start investing, I'm hoping to make sure I've done as much research to make sure I'm on the right track. CAn anyone help me with the following questions -
- Are there any companies who repair B&O systems north of Birmingham, that I might be able to visit to take the turntable for them to have a look and recommend a solution?
- Are other MMC cartridges compatible with the BeoGram4500 ? MMC3, 4 or 5 ? they tend to vary in price online from what I can see.
- Does anyone have any guides on removing cartridges - I'm almost afraid of pulling off the arm if I get it wrong!
- Can anyone recommend someone who sells replacement cartridges?
Any advice and pointers would be very gratefully received. The system has big sentimental value from the days when my grandad and I used to listen to music on it and Id love to keep using it in the future.
Thanks

Hi Rhys,
The Beogram 4500 should work with all MMC cartridges 1 to 5, 1 is best, 5 is good, (standard is de MMC4) you can get them retipt look on ebay. It could also be the built in pre amplifier thats broken. you will have to have it checked by a audio specialist. Otherwise you will get the cartridge retipt and still wont have any sound.
Good luck
Ken
You could try this firm which isnear to Birmingham,

good luck,
thanks for the heads up Ken. There's a lot to learn with the B&O world.
I'll get in touch with that company.. I've also seen a few companies in South England which is a looong way from North West Wales!
Thanks for the info with the cartridges. didn't know that the quality range improved in descending numerical order.
Took the covers off my CX100 speakers (apart from the middle ones) and they need re-foaming, luckily there are a few videos on youtube!
I've seen talk about changing the crossovers - does anyone know what that means (apologies for showing my ineptitude)
thanks again!
Audio Origin can refurbish your cartridge here is a link
