I have a B&O receiver and CD player from 1987 that work fine (never been repaired once). I would like to get new speakers and I am considering Beoplay S8, which I believe are being discontinued? Can they be connected to the old receiver?

Which receiver do you have? The 5500? You can run the S8 off the RCA Pre out.

The 4500 has powerlink sockets so no problem though you will need the special cables. Powerlink one end and the new connector the other - will work fine.

Thanks!

Pardon my lack of knowledge about this stuff! Will it be using the amp in the speakers or the amp in my receiver? Just curious.

I assume I can also use it for my Sony TV?

By definition, with PowerLink, you will be using the speaker's built-in amplifier(s).

As to working with the Sony TV, it gets complicated, but in a good way.  The short answer is "yes".  If you have the S8 connection hub, you would connect the TV's 3.5mm to the hub's 3.5mm, or if your Sony TV is like mine, use the TOSlink cable instead.  (For TOSlink, you then train the hub to the TV remote's volume buttons.)  There's also a connector on the woofer cabinet to hook up other analog audio sources.  **BUT** the S8 also appears to have a physical *switch* to go between the PowerLink and Line inputs.  The connection hub supposedly does "most recently used" automatic input selection.  In the worst case, you just stick with a single PowerLink cable, and connect the Sony TV to your 4500's Aux input!

I would first look at the other messages on this forum for a more complete explanation:

And of course B&O manuals are too vague, but at least it will give you some hints:

[Edit] And one more, since you are about-to-buy, specifically related to purchasing an old vs. new (w/hub) S8:
