I would like to upgrade the firmware on an Avant DVD Mk 3 (8463). The Avant is currently on s/w 13.0, so it needs an update to support a BeoMedia1.

The service menu shows:

  • IC3 (AP) 13.0
  • IC2 (IOP) 22.0
  • IC5 (STB-C) 3.5
  • IC5 (STB-C) Table 2.81
  • IC607 (DSM) 2.3
  • IC200 (DVD FEP) 1.6
  • EEPROM VER 043

The Wiki shows the latest version as item number 8344288 s/w 16.3, but was last updated in 2013.

A few questions:

  1. Is 16.3 still the latest firmware for this TV?
  2. Do I need to upgrade anything else, or just IC3 (either for compatibility with 16.3, or for any other benefit)?
  3. Will the code 8344288 get me everything I need (presumable just the new IC3)?

I should also clarify: I am an electronics engineer and quite happy to replace components, so please don't worry about technical ability.

Thank you in advance,

Mark

For a mark 3 AVANT DVD the last update released was 16.3

For Mark 1 & 2 the last release was 10.4

The B&O part # 8344288 is fine if your were ordering it from B&O, but as they don't have those parts any more it will not be much help to you.

In my view you will almost only get the chip you require from an AVANT being broken up for scrap

Regards Keith....

Keith, thank you as always for such an informative reply. I'm rather disappointed that B&O won't supply the firmware. If I could get hold of the data image for the firmware, I could burn an EPROM.

Do you  know whether B&O might be willing to supply a copy of this binary file?

Perhaps there's an archive somewhere. It would be nice if B&O would be willing to support a "firmware archive initiative".

Hi Mark,

getting the image might not be the problem. The real culprit is the EPROM chip you need: it has to be a 512Kbit x 8 EPROM with 55 ns!  You will have problems to get such a fast EPROM. The same is used for the AC3 Module of the Avant / Beovision 3, BV 7 ...

Using a size compatible FLASH Rom is no alternative because they are not pincompatible. /WE and A18 are swapped

Ouch! I take your point - 70nS is not difficult, but 55nS are like hens' teeth. I didn't realise that they need to be such high-spec devices. I'll go searching and ask again when I find some!

And it has to be a PLCC32 case no DIP :)

Hee hee. Forcing a DIP chip into one of those sockets could be fun!
