Hi

I picked up a Beovision MX5500 without a remote. How do I set the settings to allow it to play video from the yellow composite? It turns on and works. I have went through every setting in the system using a universal remote but I still can't get it to switch to the AV connections. Is the set broken? Do I need a real remote? Please help, quite frustrated.

[[I set mine up years ago, and trashed it as it decayed, for fear places would stop accepting big tubes for recycling.  I'll hunt for its manual tomorrow.  Hopefully by then someone better will have replied, and I can edit this out.  In the meantime to alleviate your frustration:]]

1) For my USA model, there was a "mode" it had to be put into, and then the "sockets" had to be turned on individually and given identification as particular source types.  After that, SHIFT + V.TAPE on the BeoLink 1000 selected the composite input.  (I think.  You can also try SHIFT + TV...)

2) Having the manual will help you a lot, but all I can find online is a recent UK one, which presumes you have (only) SCART connectors & SVHS mini-DIN, and the software is the latest (plus examples use a Beo4 remote).  If that's true you're golden; download it and see pages 34-35.  But if you're in the USA, or have an old model (no firmware updates!) you should reply and say what the "Type" is on your sticker on the back, e.g. "MTA 3265".

3) I thought a Logitech Harmony Hub and its app could send anything a BeoLink 1000 could.  But I don't see a "SHIFT" key in the app.  I set up my system with a BeoLink 1000.  You might say what brand of universal remote you're using, in your reply.

4) The almost-invisible button to the left of the power button, on the bottom of the front panel, selects whatever the mode (see above) calls the "main" source.  On mine, it switched to the Tuner always, which is useless, in the 21st century!  But I don't remember how it was *supposed* to work, so maybe you'll get lucky.  Well, at least, it'll give you something to play with, while you're waiting for a more helpful person to reply or for me to find my manual... ... ...

Presuming that (i) you are using a North American model, and (ii) you do not have a VX5000 hooked up,... (a) Press TV, then MENU, and select "Connections". Press 1 to select "Setup Code" number one, then press PLAY. (b) On the next three pages, select "No Source" (use v to switch thru them if they don't default that way) and press PLAY. (c) On the fourth page, titled "TV input AV2", select either V.Tape or CDV, depending on what button you want to choose the input (see below), and press PLAY. (d) On the fifth page, use v to scroll down to "Yes" and press PLAY to save the setup. How to decide whether to use V.Tape or CDV in step (c) above? Because you have to select it somehow with your remote control! This is where things get a bit hazy with a non-B&O remote. Supposedly, the AV2 sockets are selected by either pressing SHIFT, V.TAPE or SHIFT, CD. But I think B&O were presuming that you had a VX5000 connected, which makes the VX5000 be V.TAPE (first video tape on the system) and the AV2 connector be SHIFT, V.TAPE (second video tape in the system). But I don't know if maybe AV2 shifts back to just V.TAPE if there is no VX5000; you'll have to test that yourself. The next haziness is if your remote doesn't have a SHIFT button, like the Logitech Harmony iPhone app. What Logitech do is create extra keys that send out the codes for the SHIFT-ed buttons. Alas, I don't see one for V.TAPE#2 (or V.MEM #2). Which is why you might choose CDV in step (c) above: it does have a button labelled "Input DVD", which I believe is the same as SHIFT, CD. (Sorry that was so messy and filled with conditionals. If I still had my MX5500 I could test it. And if someone else had answered, you wouldn't have to read this!) Extra notes: If you have been messing around with "Devices" menu and other setup options you may need to know: To clear a device programming, turn on the TV, press > and then a number to select that device, and clear it by pressing STORE, 0, STORE. If you have messed up the IR input and it stops responding to commands, turn off the TV, then press PICTURE, 1, STORE. Finally, if you have an S-VHS connection on your source, I recommend using it: just unhook the yellow composite RCA jack and hook up the S-VHS mini-DIN jack.
