I have a recently acquired HDR1 connected to an Avant 32DVD. The idea is to archive old VHS/hi8 footage.
I would like to know how to force the "select source" menu to appear. What happens is that on first start up it appears for a few seconds but then reverts to the main menu just in the time it takes for the Avant screen to appear. There seems to be no way of forcing it to reappear as it is not available from the main menu. I am also interested to know how to record from the Avant's built in DVD player. Thanks.

The manual says
Pressing V MEM will bring up the SELECT SOURCE menu on the screen. (On some Beo4 remote controls, the V MEM button is called V TAPE).

Thanks. Yes I studied the manual. I don't have it attached to the V.MEM socket, as I use this for something else. The HDR is connected to the AV scart and named V.Tape 2. The source menu does come up, then promptly disappears. It otherwise works fine as V.MEM 2 but I will have to experiment to see if this is the problem.

Problem solved. It is V.MEM > RECORD to bring up the source menu. Different commands with some TV's apparently.

It's different because you've connected the HDR1 a different way it was supposed to be.
The HDR1 should be connected to the VTAPE socket. Then after powering up the Avant recognizes the HDR1 and the setup menu will show the HDR1 as VTAPE or VMEM and will be grayed out. Not to change.
During startup of the Avant all (pre)programmed tuner channels from the Avant will be "dumped" to the HDR1. The same as with a V8000 etc. When watching a program on tv (in the old analog days), you only need to press record twice.
But then again, it has been a while ago
Thanks. Yes I am getting to know it now and connected it as above. The only reason for not doing was I had a link product as V.MEM and found it easier to assign the hard button command to that. I've swapped them now and pressing V.MEM twice brings up the source menu on the HDR1. The V8000/HDR1 also work well together but I have no analogue other than the link frequency.
