I just recently picked up a Beocord 9000
My question is about the reliability of the auto-calibration functions.
I'm assuming the following:
The CCC will adjust tape type, tape EQ, tape bias, tape Level (Dolby Calibration)
Am I correct in this?
Second, how fine is the bias adjustment? Is it adjusted to a preset internal setting for a particular tape type, or is it adjusted to produce the best response, irregardless of a "standard" setting.
Example, I have a Denon deck, that has a standard bias setting for each of 3 tape types.
I also have my Nakamichi's, which either use a 15khz tone, to allow a manual bias adjustment, or have an automatic adjustment process. This allows a precise adjustment between every tape.
I guess what I'm asking is, will the Beocord 9000 be able to adjust Rec Bias from one tape to another, even when within the same "family", or does it apply a generic bias setting according to a specific tape type.
Second, how well does the automatic calibration hold up over the years, what are the chances that my deck's calibration functions are not accurate due to age.
I ask this, because of my experience with Nakamichi, as due to their age, the decks like CR7A with automatic calibration need to be re-adjusted to bring them back to spec.
I apologize for my long winded question. I just want to get the most out of my new Beocord.
The Beocord 9000 calibrates bias for the most linear frequency response, the PPM (0 dB on the scale is always 3% distortion) - it does so in both channels to create the best uniformity.
Tape type is automatically chosen by the tabs in the cassette, though it will correct non-standard cassettes when calibrating (an early metal tape without type IV tabs in the back will be recognized as a metal tape by CCC.)
As long as the heads aren't worn or misadjusted / bad capacitors in the amplifier circuits - there shouldn't be any problems. My two 9000's calibrates correctly all the time without any issues. CCC records a series of tones on the tape in a 9 second test - different loudness and bias points determine the variables to be adjusted. If it can't calibrate to the specific tape it will wind forward to calibrate once again; it will use standard bias points if it fails to calibrate to the tape three times. The standard bias/level settings were BASF LHI, BASF Chrom II and 3M Scotch Metafine, type III were the Sony FeCr, but could be changed to your preferred specific favourites by the push of the "store" and "Tape type" button after calibration.
Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.
Thanks for the info.
