In a quest of finding good speakers for my system I got these BeoVox 3000. By the specs these should produce really nice bass - as low as 28Hz. However they sound really weird. It is like the mid range is totally missing or screwed up. So the overall experience is fatiguing and I my records sound boring and cheap.

I have started to wonder if there is something wrong with the BeoVoxes actually. I do not know the history of these but all(i.e.woofers) seems to be original. Maybe the crossovers act weird but on both speakrs...I doubt.

So can someone tell me how these supposed to sound.

I use Lenco L78S with B&O SP10(or any other of my 30+ carts) or BeoGram 1000 with SP6-7 or SP9.

Tried various amps:

Yamaha RX497

Dual CV60

Class D TPA3116

Luxman L114

I have about 10 other speakers and these BeoVox 3000 sound the worst of the lot.

BTW: my best sounding combo is cheapo TPA3116 into AKG TXD100. It is lively and dynamic with clear highs. Bass is well articulated.

So I wonder if someone has experience with this particular speaker - how good it sounds and what kind of amp it likes.

Maybe mine needs crossover repair or something.

Are these the flat panel 'speakers?

Those have a distinctive sound, but need to be wall mounted for best effect,as they use the wall as a sort of radiator to boost the sound.

I installed loads of these back in the day, often for sceptical people who previously couldn't believe a good sound was possible from such a shallow form.

Much loved by musicians, pianists in particular!

They sound best of course, driven by a B&O amplifier.

Praps a silly question, but have you got yours wired in phase, with good quality cables?

I have them on a core and an ML/MCL. Do not expect brilliant sound, the beolab 3000 are far better. Beolab 3000 are not so pretty imho...

When in a small room placed in corners they are ok but will never sound like a BL 4000.

I restored a pair of those and they are currently paired with a Below 5000 1967.

All I can say is they sound superb, ton a bass and pretty good imaging.

You can follow my thread right here:

I don't know your room but check the polarity of your speakers first and put them on a 12" stand about 6" from the wall and see

I did see your restoration thread when I researched.

My units have no damage. Bass is smooth, without any distortion. However the imaging is weird or different. Its like there is the sound/music and there is the bass(pretty good at that) somewhere floating. Seriously it feels like some frequencies are missing.

I use original thin gray cables - one line marked with black dashes. And assumed that marked line goes to black(0) terminal. I placed the speakers on the shelve about 6'' off the wall. Maybe they need to be on the floor(12'' stand) instead. Thus I can not test right now. I have no emty floor space in my studio.

The amp I use is very flat response, no coloration on any frequency. Identical to Yamaha RX497 "Pure Direct" sound.

You might just need new capacitors.
