I am thinking about "investing" in some new speakers, but need some advice on how to go about it. I want the speakers to provide music in the living room, as well as function as the TV speakers. I have an LG Signature OLED.

My plan was to begin with a pair of Beolab 18's, then I would like to update to 2.1 with a Beolab 19, and then at a later date add some 17's for surround, either rear or rear and centre.

Managing the surround would seem easy with a Beolab transmitter, and an AV receiver, but will this then work with multiroom (I currently also have some Beoplay speakers)? I would also like to be able to switch between 2.1 and surround depending on whether I'm listening to music or watching a movie. I've also read some negative posts regarding the transmitter.

Is it possible to work something out using Beosound core?

Any advice would be welcome, sorry if any of this is dumb... I'm new to all this.

Hello, and welcome to the forum :)

First you need to make sure that you have a volume controlled output from the TV. SoundsHeavenly (advertise on this site) can help you with the cables required. You will then be able to connect eg. Beolab 18:s to the TV. BL18s need to be set to LineIn (speakers internal amplifier not used).

2.1 setup will need a receiver. Think others can better say what is needed then in terms of outputs from the receiver and connection to the speakers.

Beolab transmitter - receiver is merely a "wireless cable" that you use to replace the Powerlink cable, in the cases where the amplifiers in the speakers are used.

Multirooom with your Beoplay speakers will not be possible for the above setups. You will then need a Core (as you mention). I think that you can connect the TV to the Core and get sound to speakers that way, but others maybe can confirm.

Again, welcome. :)

Hi happysquare,

Welcome to Beoworld!  Beosound Core is a good option to connect the speakers to your TV, giving you volume control of the TV, plus access to multiroom along with your other Beoplay speakers.

An optical cable will link the TV to the Core (I can include a free 3.5mm adapter for the Core on request): https://soundsheavenly.com/tv-input/premium-braided-toslink-optical-cable-with-metal-plugs

Shielded RJ45 cables will link the Beolab 18 and 19 speakers to the Core: https://soundsheavenly.com/powerlink-rj45-cat5-connection-models-from-2013/28-2264-rj45-powerlink-compatible-shielded-cable-for-beolab-speakers-2013-and-newer.html#/3-length-2m/18-colour-black

You can then add an AV receiver in the future when you wish to have full surround sound, the TV, Core and speakers can then link to this to maintain all the features.  Any questions, please ask!

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

This might be a solution:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Extractor-Neoteck-Optical-Converter-Splitter-DAC/dp/B073FCM6LF

Then connect the toslink output of this to the Transmitter 1 (choose 3rd party audio 2.0 or 2.1.....depending on your speaker setup)

https://www.bang-olufsen.com/interactive-guide

For connecting e.g a BS Core and use the same speakers and to have multiroom with your other B&O devices,

see this thread:

https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/15592/137906.aspx

Note: I haven’t personally tested this - is meant as an inspiration for you.

But why shouldn’t it work 🙂

Is this possible with 1 Beosound core, or do I need one for each speaker?

The BS Core is a sound system.

You connect your speakers e.g. the set of BL18, that you mentioned, to it - using PowerLink cables.

It has an optical input port, that can be used for connecting the tv.

Please be aware, that the Core has no internal bas management - it therefore is not easy to match the BL18’s and a future BL19.

That's good to know; core is not really an option then, at least not a future proof one.

No, not that way!

As I tried to describe above, very well as a source device connected to a Transmitter 1, though.

Would give you BeoLink NL/multiroom along with sound from your LG tv this way.

N.B. You will have to be sure that the output (HDMI/ARC, toslink, analog line out) of the LG - for the connection to the Transmitter 1 - can be volume regulated.

If you think 5.1 setup, you will need a surround preprocessor in between the tv and the Transmitter 1.

Big advantage here, it allows for a wireless connection/WiSA to the speakers, that you mentioned.....no PL cables needed (sorry Steve)

Question: The sound from the LG Signature OLED (you mean the W7, right?) is usually said to be good - how do you feel about it?

Yes, the W7; the sound is okay, but not great; I find particularly the voice clarity with movies to be pretty bad.

Based on everything I've read, I think I'll (ease the pain and) stage the purchases as follows:

1. Beolab 17's and Beosound core, with the TV connected by cable to the core.

2. AV, Subwoofer and transmitter.

3. Beolab 18's.
