I recently acquired a Japanese made beocenter 4000 which seemed to function perfectly at first but suddenly the tape 1 side seemed to lock up. I managed to remove the tape which had got wrapped around the capstan but the playback head and transport roller will not return to their off position. I can push them in but they will not stay in place. If I present a tape into the upper housing the tape direction arrow lights up but of course I cannot push the tape in. Any ideas welcome.
How are the heads moved in and out? By a motor? In that case, the belt between the head assembly and the motor might be the problem. Either it has jumped off or is broken/slips.
Thanks for the reply; I thought there might be a belt issue but have no idea how to get at it other than by removing the back. If anyone can confirm the belt hypothesis?
