After having replaced the bad belts in subject BC, thanks to Dillen for his indispensable help, I was delighted to be able to show on the forum a revived deck, however now  the machine produces the tapecontent only through one channel.

Question: ( simply enough: how come?) would it be advisable to try to cure the patient by recapping as a first step or is there an easier access to the culprit?

Check (and clean) the large switches for record/playback.
They sit on the "sandwich" circuit boards and are activated by the record buttons through arms and levers.

Sometimes one is put on the wrong track by searching in the wrong direction:

after long time of "playing" with other B&O's I changed the 1600 from the living room with the 1200 from my "workbench",

I discovered doing so that the problem was not so obvious: the "professionally" built cables to my amplifyer turned out to pass on only one channel.

Problem easily solved.
