Howdy folks! Recently bought a Beosound 4000 and Beolab 4000 speakers. This is my third time with the venerable and iconic Bang & Olufsen.

I stumbled across beoworld recently again after receiving a non-working Beolab 4000. The red light of death!! I did some research here and found it’s a common issue for certain serial numbers. Armed with research from this helpful forum of knowledgeable folks. I went ahead and found a second hand Beolab 4000 beginning with serial number 16. It was a gamble as I was not sure it would be working when I got it.

But I remained hopeful. 2 days ago it came in and is working!! So I now have an awesome B&O system again. I used to frequent beoworld (not the forums) when I had a Beosound Century 2000. Also had a 5000 system that consisted of Beomaster 5000, Becord 5000, Beogram CD50, Beogram 5005, Beovox RL 60.2 with stands and the large remote.

So how did I end up with B&O again? Well after I had to sell my beloved Naim system with Epos ES-11 speakers. I was without a stereo. I had also recently decided to rid the house of a lot stuff and go with the minimalist approach. After much thought I decided to go with B&O once more.

I’ve owned a lot of audio in my life. Bang & Olufsen is one of many that always stuck with me. Leaving an everlasting impression on me that never faded.

I even recall when I was a kid asking my dad how do you pronounce this? I remember seeing their iconic systems in films like Christmas Vacation, How To Lose A Guy in Ten Days, and War of the Roses.

Im very ecstatic and proud to own B&O again. With all that said I look forward to discussions about not only Bang & Olufsen. But all audio as I’m a lover of many brands.

Oh! I almost forgot! How does it sound? Well...to be honest this system surprised me. I wasn’t expecting much from the Beolab 4000 or that the cassette deck would sound good. I was quickly proven wrong when I finally got the system together.

As this isn’t my first time with second hand B&O gear. I did expect some problems that would need addressed. I was prepared for problems with the glass doors and the possibility of replacing belts on the cassette deck (if it has any). The glass doors did get hung up partially opening/closing. These are now fully functional. It was only a matter of cleaning the tracks and lubricating them. I cleaned the playback head on the cassette player and found the CD player to be working.

The system came without the necessary speaker cables and a remote. I ordered those and was on my merry way. Despite some of the problems B&O equipment can have (which in my opinion are minimal) I would not hesitate to buy more of their gear. As far as I’m concerned any audio brand has reliability issues.

Ah sorry for the long winded intro folks. Only excited to have Bang & Olufsen equipment again! See yinz round the forum!!

Sincerely,

Brian

Nice story.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when I fire up my BL4000s - I don't use them much and sometimes forget what nice, well rounded speaker they are.  They are the best bang for the buck.

"yinz" - must be from western Pennsylvania?  Not sure if the mostly non-US audience is going to understand that one. Big Smile

Take care.

They sure are something. They rank high with speakers that surprised me or caught me off guard. Reminds me when I had Infinity Infinitesimal RS 0.1. They utilize a 5” woofer but is dual voice coil. Although much smaller than the BL4000 and utilizing a ribbon tweeter. They gave me quite the shock with an extremely large and robust soundstage. The BL4000 are the same way. Also remind me of my Rogers LS-1.

Beautiful and sleek but carry a serious authority for bass and surprising highs. The vocals are very impressive as well. And they have a quickness/speed I’ve  not experienced  since my Epos ES-11.

Still putting them through their paces or stress tests. I listen to a lot of music. Right now they are going through the Madonna test. They do amazingly well with the song Rain from Erotica. I use this one along with the song Erotica to test the excursion limits. Most speakers I’ve had fail this test as the bass in these tracks is heavy handed.

There is also minimal distortion when driven hard. Very surprised! But then again my RL 60.2’were the same way. Although if I remember reading correctly that the amps in these are pretty advanced. No matter how many times I hear a 4”-5” woofer perform like this it will always blow my mind.

This system is a lot of fun!! What I like most is it allows you to enjoy the music without a whole lot of fuss.

Yep I am from Western PA. :) Haha the yinz confuses folks from time to time but I’m sure folks may have heard it. Maybe...I don’t know. Glad to be here.

Well darn! I forgot to mention something else with the tests. I once said on another forum I belong to “if it doesn’t move me emotionally and bring tears of joy to my eyes then it’s not for me”.  I can happily say this system did that.
