Beosound 4 to Beolab 4

I have just bought a used Beosound 4 music centre together with two Beolab 4 speakers.

The Beosound 4 appears to work fine, listening to the radio and the cd player through a headset connected to the headset output on the Beosound 4.

When I connected the headset to the Aux Out points on the Beosound 4 I could not control the volume using either the handset or the Beosound 4.

I have yet to connect the Beolab 4 speakers to the Beosound 4. From reading around, it seems that the Beolab 4 speakers are connected to the Aux Out points on the Beosound 4. If that is so then the question of volume control arises.

Your advice in this matter would be much appreciated.

Hi, just so that I understand, you're trying 2 scenarios:

1. Headphones plugged in to the headphone socket on the bottom of the display

2. Headphones plugged in to the Aux Out point on the base where all of the connections are 

 

The results are:

1. Working correctly playing CD or Radio with the sound coming through headphones.  Note: when you plug your headphones in to the headphone jack, it will mute speakers if you have them plugged in

2. Not working.  My feedback is that the Aux Out is not for headphones.  The manual says its for things such as a mini disc player.  Obviously anything plugged in to the Aux-In or the Aux-Out port will have to be via a white and red "RCA" cable .  So if you tried to put in a 3.5mm headphone in to the port it will not work. 

 

In terms of the BeoLab 4 speakers.  There are 2 varities that were released:

1. BeoLab 4 PowerLink edition (the full fat version) 

2. BeoLab 4 PC - the lighter version , however the difference is that 1 has PowerLink cables which would be plugged in to the PowerLink ports under the BeoSound 4.

If you have the PC version and dont want to plug them in to the Headphone socket and want to hide it underneath, you will need specific cables.  You can get those from Steve at Sounds Heavenley.

and i think from memory you have to go in to the settings to enable Aux as well.

the AUX connectors (4 RCA) are fixed level connection giving a input and output to connect a tape recorder.

The AUX Out part is not suited to connect Beolab 4 PC. As Michael mentioned before ask Steve from Sound Heavenly (link at the bottom of the page). I'm sure he can help you with the appropiate adapter solution.

The Beolab 4 user guide, pages 6 and 7, refer to the speakers being connected to an audio or video system "with separate connections for the left and right sound channels" and a diagram (fig. 2) on page 7 shows this.

The Beosound 4 user guide, page 25, refers, for example, to a record player being connected to the line IN and a mini disc being connected to the line OUT. The Beoworld website states "BeoLab 4 is a compact, flexible loudspeaker concept at a highly attractive price point. In addition to its use with the BeoSound 4 music system, BeoLab 4 can also be combined with PCs or be part of other Bang & Olufsen music systems. The available information suggests clearly that Belolab 4 speakers can be connected to a Beosound 4.

They do work with the beosound 4. As Michael said, the regular BL4 connects with a power link cable to the power link sockets under the beosound 4.

If you have the PC version (which was specifically designed to work with PCs) this will need a special cable which you can get from Steve at Sounds Heavenly.

Noby, i know because i was in the same predicament.

I first started off with a pair of BL4 PC version speakers. I then used these with a BeoSound encore and plugged in to the headphone socket - not that fabulous. I then wanted to use the BL4PC with the power link sockets, so i had ordered cables through Steve and that’s how i know they work well.

I later changed my speakers to BL3s with powerlink.

It’s all a journey and we change and update our speakers based on our lifestyle, budget and how we interact with the technology.

So congrats, and i trust you’ll get much use out of the BeoSound 4 and the BeoLab 4 speakers for many years to come.
