I recently got ahold of a set of BeoVox S45 speakers to try my hand at refurbishing. Don’t know too much about the original owner, besides, from the smell, that they definitely liked smoking around their speakers. Popped the grille off and took out some screws to clean it, but was surprised to find the speakers themselves completely coated in a nasty, sticky residue (specifically the top one). Anyone know how I might go about fixing this?

That's normal.....don't quite know what it is, but I have had a number of these apart and they all have a coating like the one in your pic.....

It’s called dope - a sticky substance normally used just to reinforce the edge of the cone, but there are rare cases where the manufacturer covered the whole cone, presumably because it sounded better, and this is one of those cases. They all have it - don’t try and clean it off!

Oh, and keep us posted with photos with how you get on with the refurb... I’ve got a pair myself that need doing!
