Merry Christmas everyone!

As a little Christmas present for myself I wanted to awake the tapedeck of my beocenter 7000 so I granted it some new belts. The old ones were stiff and one of them even ruptured with just a little tension.

Well...the replacement and cleaning was easy but as soon as I press the tape button the motor is spinning again but the tape doesn' t either forward nor rewind or play. The spindles just don' t move at all. Not even a millimeter. When pressing play, the head moves to the tape and snaps back immediately. The sticker on the motor says that it`s been renewed in 1989.

I've been extremely careful loosening the two connectors of the drive...so what's the problem? A fuse? Some missing grease? Otherwise everything else is working pretty well.

Oh...and where does this connector belong to? It just was laying loose inside of the housing.

Greetings

Daniel

You don't show much of the tapedeck in question. Does the right reel rotate, when you press play - even only for a brief moment?
The lose plug could belong on the turntable section.

It's very easy to reassemble the tape mechanism and not locate the brake lever to the right hand turntable correctly. This will jam the mech when you operate play. We've all done this alas at one time or another.

You'll be able to see what's happening if you try to move the head carriage manually.

The disconnected cable in your picture, goes under the foil at the front of the unit and connects to the manual speed change selector.

I hope that you used one of Martins repair kit's?

Lovely unit's these Beocenters, great sound and innovation, one of B&O's better designs.

Thanks for your link, Martin. The belts are not the Portuguese ones, I bought them some time ago from thakker. This normally is one of the most recommended stores here in Germany when you need some belt replacement. At least in those hifi-forums I am active. E.g. "old-fidelity". Is this the German store you wrote about?

Would be a pitty if they wouldn`t fit our beocords like they should :-(

Yesterday, I did some further testing with a special tool instead of a tape inserted:

The right spindle runs, fast forward works strong but in rewind mode the head snaps back immediately.
Then I tried the same with a torn tape where the mechanism had zero resistance and there the transport worked:

Either the motor isn't strong enough when there is a tape inside or...?

Thanks Nick. Very interesting information. I searched the board but I still have to read up for that problem. Well...at least I didn't take the mechanism apart or is there a way that I accidentally touched the brake just because I unscrewed the plate at the bottom of the drive?

Smile Thanks to you the cable is on its place again! I guess it slipped out during shipping some years ago.

According to Nicks pictures of the mechanism I found, everything seems to be o.k. and shouldn't be the source of error.

Take a look for yourself:

It seems from your description that there is insufficient take up torque provided by the right hand turntable.

There is an electronic sensor under the right hand turntable, that senses whether it's turning,to trigger the auto stop when the tape reaches each end or jams.

That is why the machine drop's out in rewind, using a broken tape.

There is a small but crucial idler wheel that comes into action during the play mode,to apply drive to the right hand turntable.Wind and rewind are driven by a seperater idler.

Martin(Dillen) supplies an excellent little kit of replacement idler rubber tyres(4).The material used is a improvement on the original rubber too,so should keep it's form for longer

Replaceing the original's with these should restore full operation.

Take some more photo's as you dismantle the mech,to keep track of various small but vital spring's
