A friend recently bought a Samsung Serif TV. As he has a pair of Beolab 4000's in storage, we were considering whether it would be worthwhile to connect them to the TV.
The Samsung TV has an optical out, so I figure we need a DAC or similar to enable the connection.
However, as I am not sure the TV has volume control on the optical out (I don't have anything to test with at the moment), the connecting device probably needs some sort a volume control. We are also wondering if such a set-up would cause a delay significant enough for the sound to be out of sync with the TV.
Does anyone know a small DAC/receiver/device that will accommodate this type of set-up?
Also is there a risk the Beolabs will end up outputting static in such a set-up when the TV is not powered on?
Any recommendations or tips are highly appreciated.

Generally you won’t be able to volume control the sound from a toslink output directly.
If you count out the classical A/V receiver/preamp solutions……..in my view there are only two ways of doing that.
1: using the headphone output of the tv and have something to trigger the Beolabs to turn on/off.
(That would be the cheapest but soundwise not the best way).
2: use a device like the Hall Audio Streamer : https://www.hallaudio.com/produkt/traadloes-streaming/hall-wifi-streamer/
which you (at least in Denmark) also can buy from several resellers.

P.S. if anyone know of a small device that offers similiar features (sound from HDMI eARC and built-in trigger for Beolabs) please add this to the solutions.

Just a quick follow up question. I just realized there are two versions of the Beolab 4000's. My friend has the mk.1. I don't suppose you see any reason why this would impact the set-up?
I assume the trigger and powerlink plugs are effectively the same.
The MK1’s have a dedicated line-in connection - the MK2’s must use an adapter…..if that should be the way, you want to connect it.

I will not recomment using the headphone/phono way of connecting - the sound quality is mostly inferior (from the headphone-connector) and the speakers will have to turn on and off detecting a sound signal.
This can be annoying and in some cases you may have noice from the headphone connector, that keeps the speakers on.
When you use the HallAudio device it comes with the Powerlink cable, you’ll need - probably with a Y-cable, that you will need to fit with the appropriate lenght of DIN/PL cables (MK3 version) to each of the 4000’s.
This is the same for both versions of the BL4000, yes!
