Hi All,
I got the Beolab 14 5.1 about some 6 years ago and have been using it like how it was designed to. Powering the satellites through the Sub and I had just the Sub connected to my receiver. Moved into a new place recently which already has a 7.1 pre-wire in place. My knowledge in limited and I am completely clueless on to how to implement the Beolab 14 I already have in this space.
Can I now power the 5 satellites(Beolab) + 2 atmos speakers (new) + Sub(Beolab) from a receiver?
If the above is possible, what are the most important specs to look for when getting the 2 new atmos speakers to add to this set up?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
Hi and welcome to the beoworld forum.
The simple answer is: no!
However - your possibilities depends on the receiver (and if you want to be a little creative).
Since all the amps for the 5.1 channels of the BL14 are located in the BL14/sub, you must run the speaker cables from there….just like you are used to.
(The amplification, the crossovers etc of the BL14 setup are managed in the BL14/sub - you won’t be able to connect the satelites to the receiver as such….at least not with a good result!!!)
I assume that you are using the same receiver as before.
In addition to this you might be able to use the ‘new’ cabling for (height) speakers connected to and amplified by the receiver.
Why not pick 4 (as height speakers), if the receiver can handle it and the cabling would fit - this would give you a 5.1.4 setup!

Thank you for the response! Earlier I was connecting the satellites to the Sub and connect just the Sub wire to the receiver. So you say keep it as is and then connect the new height speaker wires to the corresponding sockets on the receiver? Would the receiver detect the setup and work? (my receiver is capable of 5.1.2)
Another question I have is, Can I get rid of the Beolab sub all together? I will get a new sub and 2 new height speakers. Connect all of them (5 Beolab satellites, new Sub and 2 new height speakers) to the receiver like the usual 5.1.2 set up. I understand this is option is more money but am I sacrificing the quality anywhere?
Thanks!
I assume that the 14-set as of now is connected this way - see picture below.
This means that the receiver ‘knows’ which output correspond with which channels. Then it would just be a matter of connecting the extra channels and assign them in the receiver setup.
That should be an easy task to try out - in addition to the existing BL14 setup, just connect the two height speakers with short wires and do the setup.
If that is ok you can move these to the intended positions.
As I wrote before, if you get rid of the sub you loose the entity of the sub/satelites - it is sound-designed to work as a complete setup.
I won’t advice using these relatively small satelites directly connected to the receiver.
However, you should be free to try it out.
In case you really want to use the new wiring, I’d rather think of investing in a set of appropriate speakers for the complete setup.
Selling the BL14 set could bring you some money. But,,,,why get rid of the BL14/sub, when you think of adding another/a new sub - the 14 is a pretty good sub!
(The only reasonable way to use the BL14 satelites on their own I can think of, would be to have two of them as the height channels - means saving the other 3 satelites for later. Then use the sub as a regular sub connected to the receiver).
By the way….the ‘new’ wiring probably consists of regular speaker wires.
These wires could be used for the connections of the satelites to the sub (maybe with a bit of extension)….depending on where they/the receiver is located.
I can imagine that you want to avoid the work of a new, new cabling.
