i did a not-so-smart thing and removed the screws that hold the torsion bar in thinking I could get the lid off to refinish it. Now I can’t figure out how to get it all back together, particularly what purpose do the 3 metal L shaped pieces serve?  Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I had the same problem. I found an exploded view in the 1700 service manual that matches the RX. The parts you're asking about are #166. Hope this helps!

I also had a similar problem. I found the same pieces as in the drawing. The best way to reassemble is to remove the back plate from the turntable and then you do not have to worry about springs and brackets flying in all directions. You can do it with the lid open and the spring is under less tension.
