"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
leosgonewild:I need to get a hold of some magnets in order to reassemble the bearing. Will update on it when I get around to it. That gunk is cause by me. I filled it with weapon oil before opening it. I was hoping it would lube the bearing. But I suspect that the deal on the bearing is not good enough, causing the grease in the bearing to dry out and harden.

I'm glad you told me that. For a moment, I had considered using WD-40, but I had a feeling it wouldn't be a good idea.
Thanks so much for this!
Would you mind taking a close-up photo of the square chip on the side with less components? That's likely the main processor and I am very curious to know what part they used.

Thank you so much!
Interesting little part. It includes a little proprietary 8051-based microcontroller. That's an old and slow slow processor, but it really doesn't need much for what it's doing: four buttons and a wheel! (And slower = longer battery life.) It only costs $1.60 in quantity. Nice!
Is it not possible to pull out the outer race of the bearing and replace the complete bearing?
I just disassembled an M5 this weekend. The bearing in the volume control was just a standard closed bearing, which yours also seems to be (at least until it disintegrated..).

Hope it's possible as 2 of my Essence remotes are leaking fluids... what a shame in quality. :-(
