But bl5’s do 24bit 96khz?! And they were in their line up for 15 or so years. The original earset is nearly 20 years old if iam not mistaken, atleast a decade. I don’t know where the bs1 had a drop of that pricing???

Where do you buy your stuff and which continent are you on? I haven’t seen any original earset for sale at a dealer since ever really, i want some though Stick out tongue

Most of the smaller stuff obviously doesn’t last as long as speakers do, that’s not that od is it?

Hi,

Hi, you are right the BL5 are 24/96 (on paper thought) but it u connect any player and set up the speakers higher of 48 they will produce very audible digital clicks almost all the time. My set was BL5 with Beosound core and the recommended settings from B&O are to keep the sample rate at 48, that’s unfortunate.

I got some Dim cables and the digital one running out the besosoind core to the speakers. The Din controlled the on/off and volume the digital a cable just for the audio signal as suggested by B&O. I try many digital converter (toslink/ coaxial) all with the same digital noise.

The earset… the ones I mention are the wireless not the old ones you said, I’m not that dumb. I don’t know B&O named the latest ones the same as the very old one. See link: https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/bo-play-earset again that’s part of what I said. If you want to buy the very old products like those old earsets they are still on the same price the had (around $160) but the new ones are $59 and those were more expensive.

I’m  in the states by the way

The speakers not lasting even 3 years with higher average prices and this company I think yes it is odd

sad. using a sample rate h

Which speakers don’t “last” 3 years? Or do you mean that not all keep up with the latest formats?

I fon’t know of any other company that keep products generally as long as b&o does and beyond that any company that doesn’t drop slightly in price over time. Most stuff from b&o doesn’t really drop in price at all, some 3rd party sellers might do that but that’s out of their control.

If you compare like for like, 5’s vs 50’s, the 5’a were a good deal. The 50’s are a lot more expensive not than when thwy launched(same gows for 90’s). Most 5’s also last a heck of a long time before they need any repair and compared to their new prices i personally don’t thing the repair is extreme in price. When fid you buy your 5’s? Where they new? And how long did it take before they needed any repair on them? Mk2 and mk3 are still fairly easily fixed and they haven’t even been made since 2016 or so. Iam not sure you can do that with any other brands active speaker from 2016, let alone 2004(1)Indifferent

I bought my BL5 new back in 2015, so one morning on 2020 one of the speakers started to make a loud digital noise for the first 10 minutes of use, every day from there was the same. I change cables, players etc I even did reset the Beosound core and nothing helped so I called B&O and they send me with their technical support and they told it was the chassis and it was going to be best to replace both for a beautiful amount of $4000 usd. Sorry but that kind of repair s in a 5 year old speaker doesn’t make sense. And the worse it was they told to wait 3 months to get the peace’s due to B&O announced the end of production of the parts.

It seems like, aside from the bl5s, you're mostly upset about resale value. Here's a hint, resale value has always been pretty bad in the US. The brand doesn't have the exposure, and the market is not big enough to support professional reseller so most can't be bothered with selling their old gear.

I use this to my advantage and buy 2nd hand, or after the inevitable price drop.

Btw, I'm sure I've read threads on this forum where people complained about B&O never lowering their prices. "How can they still charge so much for a 10 year old design?!"

Oh well, you can't please everyone.

Rod:

My point is that I don’t think B&O is what it used to be and their new products are not worth the high investment anymore, even less for the life span they give to their products. I returned the BeoSound Level and BeoSound Balance out of fear because of this reason, what if in a year from now they suddenly decide to discontinue it and you’ll just end up having a speaker that lost its value and support? Why are they doing this?

This sounds like a bizarre whine which should really say "I don't like how the market is changing and forcing B&O to adapt....I want them to stay in the 90s!"

Even my LG G1 is £5000. In two years it will be discontinued. In 4 years it will be worth nothing. I don't understand the point here.

The Balance and Level are fantastic speakers for a nominal price point. And they aren't designed to be fixed, much like a £3000 MacBook Pro isn't designed to be fixed, realistically.

This is called buying electronics in 2021.

nb. 'losing' not 'loosing'.

Apple offers you to trade-in your old product when they have no spare parts to service it.

I was told to trash my BS3 by B&O.

My BL5 used to make digital noise when hearing higher samples rates. Changed to cable (I was using ordinary analog cable) and solved the problem.

Whilst I feel sorry for you regarding some of the reliability issues you've had, I'm struggling to understand why you seem to place such a high concern on items losing their value? Do you really expect something new to hold its value for ever?

I presume you don't drive a car if this is the case, as the value of cars only ever goes downwards!

Indeed, though this may be a US specific phenomenon

Not sure too much has changed in Europe though. I bought new 18’s in early 2015 for I think 4300 GBP, and sold them at the beginning of this year for 3500.

That’s fairly impressive I would say- the equivalent of renting a new pair of 18’s for less than 200 pounds per year of ownership

But I can imagine the situation has become both worse and perhaps different to how it once was in the US, as the brands presence there has pulled back somewhat

Wow,

I shared my experience to hear different opinions, but what I found instead are closed minded passive aggressive people like you. Your answer was amazing, specially the last part.

I’m afraid we are a protective bunch. We can be the first to criticise B&O heavily and the last to tolerate or listen to its faults by newcomers. Please don’t get upset. I’m guilty of being sarcastic and impatient and I am no angel. I’ve lost my patience with B&O more in recent years than ever before. B&O is no longer the B&O of the 1970-2000s or may be us old timers haven’t evolved into it.

I’m afraid that despite what audiophiles will tell you, unless it is some esoteric collectors piece, all hifi is depreciating and never financially an asset as some have said on other hifi forums. I bought my exdemo BL90s and came close to selling them after the kids arrived with little listening time but was only offered 60% of what I paid for them despite being only 2 years old. Hifi equipment depreciates slow and steady or hard and fast. Hifi is a luxury item and every few years something new is brought out however B&O release new things much slower than Sony, LG, Panasonic….etc.

Make sure you have latest software.

Make sure you have the correct cables. I accidentally swapped a cable on my BL5 and encountered faults. I panicked as I thought the speakers had developed a serious and expensive fault. Steve at Sounds Heavenly who is on this forum is a solid and helpful chap. He will advise and sell you the right cable at sensible prices. Get in touch with him.

Most B&O gear especially of the era up to BL5 is reliable and better built than anything else in the world. The problems really arrived for B&O when they moved to non-physical formats and their software is famous and legendary for being basic, terrible, buggy….(insert negative adjective here) but we are seeing a positive but very slow progress in this domain. Let’s hope B&O do enough to ‘save their own bacon’.

B&O have for most of its 90 years been cutting-edge, beautiful, different and solid but they have also brought out some rubbish.

Don’t give on B&O or Beoworlders.

I wasn’t passive aggresive I don’t think, but if i came off as such, that certainly wasn’t my intention at all. Personally didn’t read any of the other comments as such either, i think most here try to ask questions/prod a bit to better understand what was meant.

if these posts seems to You as passive aggressive, then I would recommend You to cut of Internet.

Other advice, look in the mirror; You proposed only to receive responses in line of Your opinion. So can You handle other opinions?

edit: "our opinion" should have been "your opinion", so changed

If someone makes a point, rather than delete it in a huff, claiming the replies were 'passive aggressive', simply expand on the original point. If a poster thinks we've got it all wrong - which i doubt - feel free to interject and tell us.

My reply was that B&O - like all modern companies - has to adapt to stay in business. You can't take a model from, say, the 90s and simply stick with it for life as individuals expect the same company they grew up with, to remain untouched. The problem with that model is that the number of people supporting drops off, so revenue reduces and the company goes bust: there aren't enough Rod's for example.

Also, in my opinion, the Level and Balance are some of the most impressive products to come out of B&O for many years. Sure they aren't BL5s, but for the price and performance, they are very impressive indeed, competitive and aren't manufactured any differently from competitors: most modern electronics are competitively priced, but ultimately not designed to be repaired.

I'm happy with that. More than happy with those purchases. I'd say there's rarely anything - perhaps BeoSound 1 aside - which has left me disappointed in 2021. And the BL5s are amazing, considering how old they are!

I re-read the thread and didn't detect any passive aggressiveness either.  I even researched the definition of passive aggressive thinking maybe my understanding was incorrect (it wasn't).

To give the OP the benefit of the doubt, perhaps we perceive this differently because (dangerously speaking for others) it's because we've been on this forum for so long that we sort of "know" many of the posters (or at least know how they tend to respond and see nothing out of character).  On the other hand, what comes across to me is "doesn't agree with me" = passive aggressive.

As I said in my original post in this thread, you can't please everyone.

Speaking of not pleasing everyone (to Moxxey Smile), I think B&O fixed the Beosound 1.  When it first came out, I thought it was a dud, but I bought one last year over the Level for a variety of reasons (NL support today vs. "future" being one of them).

It's decent, but the Level is, erm, another Level! It's not quite a BS2, but it's 75% there and very portable. Also, my BS1 constantly loses the connection to wifi, thus can't be found on the app, and I have to manually reset it each time. It's the only device that does that. Very odd.

I think, on balance, I'd recommend a Level to people. B&O has got this spot on. Unlike the BS1 you can easily remove it from power, especially when it's on the wall mount.
