Hi, I recently aquired an RX2 turntable, to use with my 4500 system. I'm very pleased with it, and it sounds pretty good. I had to buy a RIAA preamp to get it to work with the Beocenter 4500 as there wasn't one built in.

I understand the Beogram 4500 that was meant to go with this system already had an RIAA preamp built into it. By all accounts that turntable and other linear tracking units from the same period were somewhat less robust ( and possibly not as good) as my RX2, so on that basis i am happy with it.

So, now what I need to know is, what is the preferred RIAA preamp to use? The one I got was a cheap £20 maplin one, which I bought basically just to see if I gould get the turntable to work. Now I know it does, I'm very keen to get it sounding 'right'. Will a more expensive preamp improve the sound? Which one do I go for?  I'm a bit in the dark about it, and would appreciate some guidance.

Thanks :-)

I use a TC770LC from www.phonopreamps.com and am delighted with it. It sounds great and has variable output to compensate for the low output from B&O cartridges.

I'm using the same unit to connect my Beogram 3000 tangential to my BS9000, and I can highly recommend it. Perfect for level matching the low output B&O cartridge (MMC2 in my case) to the other signal sources so you don't get a huge level mismatch. Also, I like the DIN plug on the back as it saves me having to go from DIN out of the table to RCA plus ground wire, just plug and go. Wonderful sound too.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

I nearly bought a beogram 4500 but I think I'll stick with the RX2, I really like it. Mine doesn't have a din plug it just has standard Phono plugs coming from the table. It has an MMC3 cartridge and it previously belonged to my dad, who never really used it even from new, so it's in great condition. I think I'll try one of those preamps that Graham suggested, just to bring the level up. Should be good. Thanks so much for the advice!

I can confirm Grahams opinion, I have been using the TC 750 for years now, chack the phono preamp site, my model has 3 inputs + preamp. And I use all of them to my Beosound 3000

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
