Hello everyone, I am new here, and I need some help with my recently acquired Beosystem 5500.

I first learned about B&O in 1998 when I worked with a private installer in the NY Tri-state area installing B&O equipment for the B&O store at the Short Hills Mall in NJ. Since then I have always wanted to own a B&O music system besides a pair of A8 headphones and a used Beocom 1600 that I got as a gift.

Today I own a Beosystem 5500, a pair of Penta MK1s, and a pair of Beolab 5000 speakers.

I bought all of it for $800.

I use the Pentas with my computer and the Beolab 5000s with my MP3 player.

The problem I have is with the Beosystem.

All the components have issues, The Beosystem's headphone input is almost non-functioning, you hear very little of the music but it has a loud hum. also the Penta's don't sound good when connected to it by the speakerlink cables, they sound better with my mp3 player. and the heatsink in the back gets really hot after only 5 minutes using only the headphone jack, and the beolink controller also has to be pointed directly at the front of the system or else it wont work even though it has new batteries. The Beocord works but the tray does not move in or out, it just makes a noise but it doesn't move. i have to open it manually.  and the arm of the beogram does not move at all. i also have to move it manually. and last but not least, the beogram cd does not read any cd's i put in it.

for now I just want to get the Beomaster and Beogram CD working again. I can wait to get the other 2 components fixed in the future,.

I have read that the capacitors stop working correctly on these old Beosystems, mine is 26 years old.

My question is, would changing the capacitors on my Beosystem fix these issues? and also where can I get capacitors, does anyone sell kits for these Beosystems? I've looked online and i was not able to find anything.

I know I can send my Beosystem to a B&O store or Atlantic systems for repair, but I really don't have a lot of money to spend, which is why I am thinking of getting the capacitors and giving them to my brother who has experience soldering computer equipment, mostly motherboards.

This seems to be the most cost effective way for me.  So if anyone can point me to the right direction I'll appreciate it.

Ralph.

Welcome Ralph!

All these sound like standard faults. I'll include a few links to old threads / searches which are by no means instructions for repair, but should give you some idea what you're up against.

If you're not experienced with electronics, I can't really recommend trying to do the Beomaster or the CD yourself. The Beocord and Beogram are feasible jobs for somebody who has the patience of working with small mechanical things without messing stuff up.

Cap kits and belts are available from member Dillen.

Note that we just recently upgraded the forum and all the old threads before this month are in the archives; there's a lot more info over there.
