Hello Everyone,

It was suggested to myself and Keith via email (by member PhilLondon, the Gentleman behind our App!) that Home Automation is something which is becoming more and more prevalent, and of course as a result more and more discussed.

In order to keep these very valuable and interesting threads together, and also stimulate new questions and discussions for all of us to refer to when the need arises, I have decided to change the name of the Sub-Forum "Bang & Olufsen & Your Computer" to "Bang & Olufsen & Home Automation"

In addition to 'Beo-Mac' and 'Beo-PC' in that category I suggest two, or possibly three more categories.  I have no set rules as to what they will be, but we need to cover specific areas.

I spoke to Keith this afternoon who suggested "BeoLink Gateway" as one.  I suggested "Network Link" as the other, with possibly "Automated Lighting" which Keith didn't agree with, and then I wasn't so sure too.  Home Automation is clearly the future of AV so I'd like BeoWorld to be in there from the beginning helping us learn, understand, and when we've learnt enough - implement!

So, we need to break the whole "Home Automation" down into two or three broad categories which are all distinct from each other...

May I ask for your valued opinions please?

Lee

I actually think that breaking down home automation into subcategories is getting too specific. All of these aspects of home automation really interrelate. It would just be great to have the general category of Home Automation as a repository for our information. Perhaps after we have built up enough information in the forum, we could generate some more specific wiki pages.

I agree a single area is what is needed to we have all automation posts together.

i look forward to having a dedicated area as this is something that really interests me.

I especially hope that people will share their custom strings. I know that there are some custom strings floating around for such things as fireplaces. I was just thinking today about taking on the task of writing custom strings for the Nest thermostat and for WeMo. I spent all summer working on the code for Philips Hue. It seems a shame for people not to share these. After we generate enough of a knowledge base, we could organize these into wikis.

I agree, Home Automation as a single area.

And on a point of detail, could that tiny Beotech link that appears top right of the main page be put somewhere more prominent and accessible, such as on the Wikis tab?

I'd suggest a that the top section is renames "B&O Integration", and then below "Beo-PC", "Beo-Mac" and the new "Home Automation".

Perhaps it would make sense to make the beo6 forum a subforum under b&o integration.

But, would you say that anticipating just how diverse home automation will become, that one sub-forum will cover everything?

I'd love to 'future-proof' this from the off, hence trying to carve it up into at least two broad categories...

Thank you for all you input so far everyone by the way Yes - thumbs up

I cannot think of categories to split Home Automation, and I think it's beneficial to have a single place to ask questions and look for tips, but one could create one for AV Integration & Distribution which is a distinct subject in my point of view. It could cover things like NL, DLNA servers, NAS, HDMI matrix, Sonos Integration, Apple TV, Roku... It's quite different from Home Automation and fits nicely under the "B&O Integration" banner, but I haven't seen so many thread on this lately.

B&O Integration

  • Beo-PC
  • Beo-Mac
  • Home Automation
  • AV Integration & Distribution

I vote for this approach.

Me too - I think carving up the Home Automation forum could be counter productive as it is the integration that is of interest rather than which product/technology is used to achieve that integration.

Many of the threads are likely to be applicable to more than one of the subcategories or become that way as the discussion of a given topic progresses if things are split up too much.

Martin.

IMHO this is the right approach.
