I'm thinking of buying a Beovision 11 55''. What blu ray player do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Hi Spotgest,

The OPPO range seems to get a big thumbs up from B&O.

However at half of the price, do consider many beautiful performing models from Pioneer (LX55 especially), Panasonic and SONY.

Stay away from Samdung models though (definitely the McDonalds of the Blu-ray market) and don't forget to add an Apple TV box :)

Njoy your purchases :)

There is a lot to think about when you buy the player.
For example, placement, size and noise.

The players with slot-in usually sounds more. I do not like the sound of a spinning disc, even if the sound makes it unnoticeable while playing it still buzzes on pauses and such, which annoys me never the less.

A very important thing is DVD upscaling.
Most bluray players render bluray video good since the media is very good at the beginning.

The same is not true for DVD which is very low resolution compared to the current TV sizes and full hd.
That means that you need a very good scaler to perform the scaling so that pictures look sharp and colorful.
I have a Yamaha dvd-s1800 player that makes dvd look almost like bluray.
I actually prefer it to the pixelated extremely sharp bluray pictures that are "pixel perfect".

The Oppo bdp93 probably has the very necessary things to give great picture both on bluray and dvd but it is also very expensive.

I think you can get quality picture like it for a little less money also, just make sure to look for a player with a good scaler if you like me looks more at dvd than bluray.

Too true Markledee.  What I've always loved about Panasonic is their amazing reliability. Their products just seems to last and last.  I think it is fair to say that they bulit the best ever performing video recorders ever back in the VHS day. Still got one from 1990 and one from 1999 that performs flawlessly :)

Only thing that scares me about Blu-Ray is the fact that it is a physical format and whether its' days are numbered?

I have a Panasonic DMP-BDT310 and it is awsome and most important B&O friendly. Also works via your iDevice via Panasonic Remote app. Smile

Over the past three or so years, i've heard nothing but praise for the Panasonic Blu-Ray players.  I also know first hand that their after sales service is truly spectacular with ALL parts available for a minimum of 10 years.  How do I know? I used to work on a weekend for an independent Panasonic / Technics dealership during my college and university years :)

I agree it's a worry.

Elsewhere people have made the comment that downloads are OK for smaller screens, but once you are above 40" you will want the quality of a BluRay -- of course within a year or three downloads of 25GB instead of 2.5GB will be the norm, but in the short term and on large screens BR may have a place in some people's homes.

And as posted elsewhere, I have been impressed with how the PS3 has upscaled one DVD this past weekend, and so I will be experimenting more on that front !  My only caution is the excessive prices for BR media ... and SWMBO makes the valid argument that most movies we only watch once, and so iTunes rentals are always an attractive option.  We frequently browse the Trailers section, vote (of course she usually wins), and watch a download -- advert littered commercially broadcast movies are impossible to watch these days !

I have a PS3 for watching Bluray. Although I'm a big fan of digitally downloading material, I have watched Prometheus in HD on both formats, and Bluray wins hands. On a 55 inch screen it would be even more noticeable.

The PS3 gives you a computer of some sort, together with apps like Netflix. And of course a gaming machine.

I believe that it has the Oppo name dropped from the start up display. There were rumours that a B&O name appeared however from a legal point of view that would totally be unethical.

I believe that is the only difference :)

Is there a custom B&O version of the Oppo BDP-93? I was looking at the player a bit today and found it quite pleasing, perhaps I´ll just have to get one or two. But it is a year old now, probably comes a new one soon?

Yes Michael, there are two new models just about to be launched... 103 & 105.  Have a great read here...

I would go for the OPPO - the BO-version. The 93 is already replaced by the 103. Maybe you still can get the 93 for less than the new one.

The B&O-version must be ordered through a B&O-dealer, so you probably won't get that anymore.

Ask your dealer if he would sell his, when he buys the new one Stick out tongue

The only difference (OPPO-bo vs OPPO-non-bo is the missing start- and screensaver-logo. There is NO B&O-logo on it!

Personally I do both Bluray- and download-watching. For the "extraordinary movies" and specially for concerts, that I enjoy more than once, it is Bluray. For movies "once seen and soon forgotten" a download-version works well for me.

The OPPO can do Netflix (http://support.netflix.com/en/node/316#gsc.tab=0). Probably the scaler of this excelent player will work magic on a download as well.

P.S. If you have a Bsys3 and plan to go for a HomeCinema-solution, I would definetely recommend the OPPO 103!

PS3 will be the best, it will be ready for 4K and you can use like a mediacenter. It has a 500GB hard drive. And the quality is very good. Now there is a very slim model. In flatpanelshd test all tv with PS3 (B&O included)

But it crap for scaling dvds. And it also consumes alot more power and you need to use its own menu system.

But I only used HD videos. I think DVD video is not good enough for a new LCD or Plasma.

PS3 is a toy - it's also noisy and has a grainy picture.

I bought a cambridge audio blu ray from Richer Sounds - it's 100% identical to an Oppo but you can buy it and get it repaired easily - rather than the Oppo which seems to be very net based.

It's a superb bit of kit

I must admit my previous generation PS3 was very noisy, but my recent one is a much quieter.

True, my old PS3 sounded like a diesel generator but the slim is as good as silent and I can't see I've ever noticed graininess, although I would like to see it A/Bd with a supposed high-end Blu-Ray player.

I would recommend an Oppo.

Apart from it's upscaling ability with DVDs,another benefit is Oppo's support by way of the speed with which it responds to problems with a firmware update.

Have a look at

I disagree. I watch alot of DVDs on my 55inch screen and it looks very good thanks to the faroudja chip in my DVD player. Looks very much better than the media would look like just scaled up without any enhancements.

I suppose this means the difference is just other firmware than the regular oppo bdp93. But why is that even important? I'd rather have fresh firmware than an old custom one that just tries to make it more 'anonymous' in your complete B&O setup. The IR commands from the tv should be the same for both models.

I am not sure I'd you can use the rs232 port for puc instead of ir but that could also be beneficial if you want to be able to use the oppo remote also.

Thanks for that recommendation Flappo. I managed to get hold of one of the last Cambridge BD 651 models, which is virtually identical to the Oppo 93 and at a reduced ex display price. The  only PUC option currently available for download is that for the Cambridge BD 650..... which seems to work fine. When I couldn't find the 651 download I initially tried the Oppo PUC download but found that its remote coding was totally different from that of the Cambridge.

i am currently using the IR blaster for control, but understand that the Cambridge/ Oppo players can take a rear mini jack connection instead. The BV11 menu wil allow you to choose an IR- jack output instead of the blaster. In fact the BV11 options are amazingly comprehensive.... once you get the hang of navigating down through the sub-options.
