I own two Beolabs 3500, one is software version 1.2, the other is 2.0.

I now want to upgrade both to the latest software, but my dealer asks for the serial numbers of them before ordering the upgrade parts.

I don't want to take them both of the walls, because it was hard enough to install them there.

Do the serial numbers really matter ?

Martin,

You can find details about the upgrade HERE

Given that both your Beolab 3500's are below version 2.1 means I am not really sure why the dealer needs the serial numbers because they are clearly Mark 1 versions meaning they do not have Powerlink for Beolink Wireless and you will be upgrading them to version 2.1 I am guessing.

The serial number is not stored in the unit itself

Hi Keith,

I've seen your faq. I don't know why my dealer asked for the serial numbers. I told him that I want to upgrade to sw 2.1 but he suggested to upgrade to 3.33. Is it possible to upgrade to 3.33 even if my 3500 are both MK1 ?

Martin, That is a very good question

Without question you can upgrade both Mark 1 & 2 (not that you should ever find a Mark 2 at that level) to software version 2.1 BUT if a Wireless 1 is connected, the connection can ONLY be made via the MasterLink.

Version 2.1 replaces the micro-processor PCB36 Part Number 8006009

Software Version 2.1 basically changes the display as below:-

  • A.TAPE      -> A.MEM
  • A.TAPE2    -> N.MUSIC
  • V.TAPE      -> V.MEM
  • V.TAPE2    -> DVD2
  • CDV            -> DVD
  • PHONO      -> N.RADIO
  • SAT             -> DTV

I can see no reason why you cannot upgrade to the latest software version 3.33 which also requires micro-processor PCB36 with a new part number of 8002944 to be replaced. However, this new software really only provides two extra facilites:-

  1. Master Link Gateway compatible and A.AUX command is possible
  2. Powerlink facility on Mark 2 hardware units using the socket which is MCL on Mark 1 units

Taking the above into consideration, I would just upgrade to version 2.1 which certainly does not require the dealer to know serial numbers.

Thanks again Keith,

today my dealer told me that he won't get the required parts from B&O munich anymore because he's no more a certified a/v dealer.

I found another dealer nearby who is certified and he'll order the parts for me.

On the Beolabs 3500 I will go for sw 2.1 as you suggested.

Kind regards

Martin

I walked into a B&O store a few months ago with an old BL1000 remote and pressed the PHONO button. PHONO showed up on their BL3500's display. Either they have a really really old BL3500 on their wall, or else recent SW can still display old source labels. I checked this because I still use a B&O turntable (nice BG9500 from Leslie (thanks Leslie!)) and was thinking of upgrading my SW. In the end, the update was too expensive for too little benefit, so I skipped it and stayed with my old SW V1.1.

Your dealer had his Beolab 3500 prior to version 2.1
