My father, aged 77, has just downsized to an 'Assisted Living' apartment and has had to 'downsize'. This means there is no from for his Beocenter 9000 and his Beogram 5500. We have bought him a midi system that fits on the side of his desk. He is not a happy bunny but accepts that times change and that he has to move on. Funds are quite tight.
His B and O system was his pride and joy and, probably 25 years ago or so when he bought it ( he can't remember exactly when) he had a bank loan to pay for it. He is, as one can imagine, finding it difficult to believe that there isn't a huge queue of people waiting to snap it up for 100s of pounds.
I have never had B and O so it is a world away from my Cambridge Audio kit.
My question to those wiser than me is, 'Is there any value to this kit ? It doesn't really feature on EBay and if it does it goes very cheap. Is there a use for it for spares? He would prefer someone to get some use from it for nothing rather than bin it?
Can someone please advise?
Many thanks.
Hi and welcome to Beoworld. Without knowing the condition of the items, and even if they are in working condition, it would be very difficult to even guess a value. If the Beogram is in good working condition and comes with a good cartridge then maybe around £150 if you are lucky, if not then anyone's guess. The Beocentre, again, depends on condition. A common fault is the plastic spindle in the centre of the cd unit. If this is broken and the cd is not playing, then it is usually the kiss of death for these units. I am sure other members will advise you better than me, but the main point is that condition is everything with any used B&O.
Where abouts are you situated?
Graeme.
Many thanks. I am in Hampshire in the UK. I will plug it all in and see what works. Do people buy and sell on this site?
I am sure you need to have at least silver membership to sell on Beoworld and there is a 'for sale' section for this. The Beocenter 9000 series ( 8000 ,8500, 9000, 9300,9500) are always well liked here, and regarded by many as classic B&O design, but as I said before they do have their problems and obtaining spare parts can be difficult. Please let us know the condition of the items and what you decide to do. If they are both in good condition I am sure they will generate some interest here. Are there any speakers with the system? If so please describe the model number( i.e. Beovox S55 or Beovox CX100), and condition if possible. Last point is there a remote for the system? i.e. Beolink 1000 or Beo4?
I expect you have already considered this but how about keeping the B&O yourself? That way you get a nice system and it 'stays in the family' as it were. You already have an interest in hifi with your Cambridge Audio system, maybe this will spark an interest in B&O for you too.
Seems a bit hard - why not swap the 9000 for a Beomaster 5500 and CD5500 and they could stack and be a 'mini-system' which will sound far better than any modern mini-system and will give an old man far more pleasure. Quite possibly cost neutral.
