I've picked up my Beogram today, and as described by the seller, it needs a new stylus, but before I send the cartridge away to Axel, I have another significant worry. The deck makes a LOT of noise, which I'm sure isn't right; I'd describe it as sounding like a computer fan with too much dust in the bearings. What could be causing that? The arm tracks correctly to the record, but because the stylus is so tired, I can't tell whether it's playing at the correct speed. A little help with a starting point?

Probably the motor bearings dry and in need of cleaning/lubrication.
Lift off the platter, rotate the subplatter and listen for the noise.
If the noise seems to indeed come from the motor, take off the belt and rotate the motor pulley by hand.
It should rotate completely even and noisefree. If it makes a click-click noise, a motor service (or maybe a
replacement motor) is needed.

It does seem to be coming from the motor, so I suspect you're right. How hard a job is a motor service? I also noticed that the arm made noise coming to position, then lowered, and began to make noise again. I pressed the lift button, and then the turn button, and on pressing turn it made more noise, but didn't move. I suspect I'm going to have a little to do, on this.
