I have just purchased a Beogram CDX.
When I insert a CD and press 'PLAY' the CD rotates hesitatingly for a few revolutions and then stops. No sound is forthcoming. I have tried several times to get it to play with the same result each time.
Cosmetically, the unit is in very good condition, the lid opens and closes as it should and the unit doesn't look as though it has been misused.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try cleaning the laser head with a cotton bud and cassette head cleaner, or isopropyl alcohol first. The laser faces the sky, and dust and dirt falls towards the earth. That may do it.
If not, your laser has failed... I'm not sure if you can replace any capacitors etc to repair it - Martin is your man here (amongst other excellent repair chaps we have on here of course!) so I'd sit back and await some proper advice!

The CDX is famous for dicky solder joints - not sure if this is the case here but if you're handy with a soldering iron, touching up any joints that appear suspect can do no harm.

Thanks for the suggestions re: the CDX - much appreciated - I'll give it a try. If I have no joy, then I guess it's going back to the seller.

I guess that if a straightforward lens-cleaning as Lee suggested fails to resolve the problem, then back to the seller it goes.

Good luck with the CDX. I have one mothballed myself - in 'as new' condition having had one elderly owner from new who "never got on with CD's" and used it three times before retiring it back to its box in the loft.. I plan to use it with my fully 'Classic Audio' restored complete 1960's 5000 system.
The laser is just about bullet proof - the solder joints are a known problem - once fixed, you will have possibly the sweetest sounding CD player available. Sounds almost like a record player! Ask for a discount and get bit fixed - where are you? In additio to it stopping, one usually gets a ? in the display.

Charcoal grey alcantara/leather/CF interior and charcoal grey wheels/CF centres tone it down a bit!
Tried lens cleaning as you suggested to no avail. Wonder if the fact that it was shipped without transport screws fitted might be the problem?
My ''70s' Classic Audio set-up : Beomaster 3002 Linn Sondek LP12 SME3009 SII Imp Shure V15 III, Nakamichi 582, Kef Reference 104aB speakers all purchased new and still as good today as the day I bought them. I also swap the 3000-2 with a 4000 and the V15III with a V15vxMR.

I'm up in Staffordshire - not exactly a hotbed of B&O technicians! Any suggestions as to who could sort it if I decide to go that route?
I am giving serious thought to a CDX 2 from a well-regarded dealer in Germany. Altho' the price is a bit steep, it would come with a two year guarantee.

Quite a difference between the CDX and the CDX2. The CDX used the original 14 bit 4x oversampling TDA1540 DAC whereas the later CDX2 uses the iconic TDA1541 16 bit DAC. The CDX2 is less bullet proof in the laser department though the solder joints are less dodgy. I have a CDX which did the same as yours and which I had fixed - works fine ever since - for the last 15 years!! I took it to Lintone Hi-Fi some years ago as I was considering a new CD player - it performed as well as anything I heard with the exception of the Naim CD555 - but we were using a Naim system as the listening system.
There are a fair number of CDXs around so returning it and getting one that has already been fixed is certainly an option. I would suggest contacting Tim Jarman and asking if he can help - he lives near London but is worth the travel - he will laugh at your Nakamichi!
